
Six Ladyjacks Named All-SLC

PLANO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team placed six players on the 2002 All-Southland Conference team announced the league office Thursday. Sophomore midfielder Christie Mestayer (Houston, Texas), freshmen Kim Gray (Spring, Texas) and Natascia Michalezki (Calgary, Alberta) were named second-team All-SLC, while freshman midfielder Lauren Cummings (Kingwood, Texas), freshman Tayah Schroter-Gillespie (Calgary, Alberta) and sophomore Lauren Matkin (Wimberley, Texas) earned honorable mention nods.
In only her first season, Michalezki recorded 154 saves which is the best single-season mark in school history. Michalezki also posted six shutouts and a 1.72 goals against average. Michalezki was a three-time Southland Conference goalkeeper of the week.
Mestayer finished fourth on the team in scoring with nine points. She scored three goals and dished out three assists and was also a league defensive player of the week selection.
Gray helped lead a defensive charge that recorded six shutouts in 2002. She also scored eight points (three goals and two assists) from her defender position. Gray earned SLC defensive player of the week honors during the second week of the season.
Cummings had huge impact on the Ladyjacks in her rookie season. She finished tied for the team lead in points (10) and goals (5). Cummings also netted the game-winning goal against Nicholls State.
Schroter-Gillespie was a stalwart for the Ladyjacks' defensive unit. One of the fastest players on the team, Schroter-Gillespie played a key role in defensive unit that recorded six shutouts. The Ladyjacks' defense also held seven other opponents to only one goal. She received the conference defensive player of the week honor on Oct. 29th.
Matkin concluded a solid sophomore campaign that saw her play in 19 games, earning 10 starts. She finished the season tied for the team lead assists (3). Matkin also netted two goals.
The Ladyjacks concluded the 2002 season with a 7-9-4 overall record and were fifth in the Southland Conference with a 4-4-4 record.
