PLANO, Texas - Freshmen Tayah Schroter-Gillespie (Calgary, Alberta) and Natascia Michalezki (Calgary, Alberta) were named Southland Conference players of the week announced the league office Wednesday.
Gillespie earned the SLC defensive player of the week honor for her performance in the Ladyjacks game against defending Southland Conference champion, Southwest Texas, which ended in 0-0 tie after two overtimes. Gillespie led a defensive charge that held the Bobcats scoreless in 110 minutes of action. SFA allowed the Bobcats only 14 shots in the game. It is the first time this season that Gillespie has earned the award.
For the third time this season, and the second consecutive week, Michalezki was named Southland Conference goalkeeper of the week. Michalezki has been on a tear surrendering only one goal in the Ladyjacks last four matches. During that time, Michalezki has played 400 minutes, recording 22 saves and a 0.23 goals against average. She recorded her fifth shutout of the season and tallied nine saves in the double-overtime tie with Southwest Texas. It was the Ladyjacks' second double overtime game in its last three contests.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday against McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 3 p.m., from Lake Charles, La.
