AUBURN, Ala. - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's cross country teams ran at the Auburn Invite in Auburn, Ala., Saturday. The Lumberjacks scored 187 points to finish sixth while the Ladyjacks scored 363 points to finish 13th.
The Lumberjacks were led by junior Nate Flores who continues to have a strong cross country season. He finished seventh overall with a time 24:08.65. Justin Meier was the second Lumberjack to finish, crossing the line 21st overall with his time of 24:51.00. Senior Amlesom Teklai recorded a time of 25:11.09 to finish 42nd. Freshman Julian Acuna was 56th with his time of 25:26.96. Marc Farris finished the race 79th with his time of 25:53.70. Teammate Mike Thompson finished only 26 hundredths of a second off of Farris' pace.
In the women's race, SFA was paced by sophomore Ana Rodriguez and her time of 17:40.89. She finished the race 22nd overall. Emily Hufstedler was the second Ladyjack to cross the finish line with her time of 18:25.13. Hollie Counts was 93rd overall crossing the line at 19:02.40. Freshman Kathryn Scarborough recorded a time of 19:18.67 to finish 105th. Jessica Partin closed out the scoring for SFA with her time of 19:40.42. Her time was good enough for a 121st-place finish.
"All in all this was a solid mid-year meet for us," said SFA head coach Alex Gibby. "Some of our athletes performed really well. On the women's side, Ana Rodriguez ran 10 seconds faster than she did last year. Emily Hufstedler continues to have a breakthrough season for our team. You can just see her confidence grow with every mile. Hollie Counts and Kathryn Scarborough put together a good race. I also thought that Vicky Jannise ran well coming back from an injury and she could make a real impact on our top five. On the men's side, we ran well through our top four spots. We were shaky at number five. We need to draw our number five runner in a little bit and close up that gap, but this was an improvement over the Oklahoma State meet."
The SFA cross country teams will return to action Monday Nov. 4, 2002, at the Southland Conference Championships. The race will take place at the NSU Golf Course in Natchitoches, La.
