NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team lost to Sam Houston State, 10-8, Tuesday afternoon at the 2nd Annual SFA/SHSU Super Dual. SFA is now 1-1 in the Super Dual meet having beaten the Bearkats, 11-7, last season.
The Bearkats took an early 2-1 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches in the morning session. SHSU extended its lead to 4-1after winning at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, but SFA fought right back to win at Nos. 3 - 6 singles and take a slim 5-4 advantage after the morning session. SFA's Emily Voss put the Ladyjacks on the scoreboard with her 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles. Megan Langston, Christine Huynh and Melissa Bass all followed with victories at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles, respectively, for SFA.
The Ladyjacks' one point lead evaporated quickly as Sam Houston State's dominance in doubles continued, as the Bearkats won two of the three doubles matches in the afternoon session. The match was tied at 6 heading into the final round of singles. Bass and Ashley Johnson picked up singles wins for SFA, but the Bearkats picked up wins at Nos. 1 - 3 singles to take a 9-8 advantage with one match remaining. After losing the first set, 6-2, Huynh battled back against the Bearkats' Erika Rudich to win the second set 7-5. But Rudich held on in the tiebreaker, 10-6, to hand Sam Houston State it's first-ever Super Dual victory.
The Ladyjacks open up the spring season Saturday, Feb. 1, at Louisiana Tech. The match is slated to begin at noon in Ruston, La.
