
'Jacks Drop Third Straight SLC Game, 49-45

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks dropped their third straight Southland Conference game Saturday afternoon to the Bearkats of Sam Houston by a 49-45 score. Both teams struggled to find a rhythm offensively, but Sam Houston found enough offense in the final two minutes of play to pull out the win.
The loss drops the 'Jacks to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in Southland Conference play, while the win snaps a two game SLC losing streak for the Bearkats (8-7, 3-4).
SFA led by one at the half, 22-21 and held the lead for most of the second half, building it to as large as five points, 29-24 with 14:40 to play in the game. Sam Houston chipped away at the SFA margin tying the score at 29-29 with just under 13:00 to play. The 'Jacks immediately retook the lead and held on until Donald Cole hit a lay-up with 5:40 remaining in the game to give Sam Houston its first lead of the second half. SFA countered and regained the lead at 45-44 with 2:36 to play and did not score another point as the Bearkats outscored SFA 5-0 down the stretch for the win.
Beaumont junior Skip Jackson led SFA with 14 points, while Robert Shannon led the Bearkats with 16. Ransom White led the 'Jacks on the boards with 10-rebounds to go along with 10-points for his second double-double of the year. Donald Cole led the Bearkats on the glass with 11-rebounds to go along with his 10-point night. Sam Houston outrebounded the 'Jacks 41-34 for the game.
Neither team shot the ball well with SFA connecting on only 19 of 57 from the floor (.333), and was only 5- 23 (.217) from beyond the three point arc. Sam Houston also shot only .333 from the field (15-45), but went to the free throw line 23 times, making 15. SFA was 2 of 7 at the stripe.
The Lumberjacks return to action Thursday night as they start a three game road trip at UT-Arlington, tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
