LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team closed out the 2001 Four Points Sheraton/Red Raider Classic with a victory over Texas-El Paso Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (30-22, 24-30, 30-21, 30-28).
Defense was the key to the victory for the second consecutive match as the Ladyjacks had six players record at least eight digs, including junior Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) and senior Joci Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M.) who led the Ladyjacks with 15. SFA allowed the Miners only a .112 attack percentage.
Junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) continued her torrid pace offensively as she struck for 20 kills for the second night in a row. Shaw and junior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) recorded season-high kills against UTEP. Shaw reecorded 10 kills, for her first double-double of the season, while Wilson struck for 11. Senior setter Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) had another solid match as she led SFA with 44 assists and recorded six kills, eight digs and three total blocks.
"It was a good sign to see other people step up offensively," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We need other people to shoulder some of the load because we can't just count on one person. We've got some players who can get the job done and I think we saw some of that today."
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Tuesday against Louisana Tech. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
