Ladyjacks Sweep Home Opener Against SMU Senior Kristy Rhodes leads the way with 17 kills
NACOGDOCHES -- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team defeated Southern Methodist Tuesday night at William R. Johnson Coliseum, 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-28). The Ladyjacks improved their overall record to 3-2 with the win.
The Ladyjacks were led by senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) who recorded her third double-double of the season with her team-high 17 kills and 14 digs. She also recorded a season-high six assists, two service aces and two total blocks.
With the Ladyjacks up 2-0, SMU was threatening to get on the scoreboard with a 23-21 lead in game three. But the Ladyjacks were too much down the stretch as Rhodes recorded seven kills, eight digs and two aces in the final game to help SFA perserve the victory.
SFA was solid on defense as six players recorded at least seven digs. Junior Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) and senior Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) recorded 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Dorcheus led the team with 39 assists.
"I'm happy with the win," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We saw some good things tonight from our team. It is important that we take care of our side of the court and not worry with what our opponent is doing and I think tonight we showed signs of improvement in this area. These non-conference matches will teach us to play better. Tonight we are going to enjoy this victory and tomorrow we'll focus on the trip to Texas Tech.
The Ladyjacks will be in Lubbock, Texas, Friday and Suturday at the Texas Tech Invitational. SFA will open the tournament against host Texas Tech on Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. from the United Spirit Arena.
