
Southland Conference Weekly Tennis Update

Although rain prevented four matches from being played last week, Texas-San Antonio (4-3, 2-0) was able to start its Southland Conference schedule in the Alamo City and picked up a pair of wins. The Roadrunners take the early 2-0 lead in the league with a 5-2 win over Northwestern State and a 5-2 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
Senior Phyllis Wilunda, the Southland Player of the Week, was undefeated in No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. She won in straight sets over Northwestern's Eliza Young 6-2, 6-4, then partnered with Svenja Fuhrig in an 8-5 win over Brandi Mathews and Katy Wallace. On Sunday, Wilunda rallied to defeat ULM's Kaori Tanabe 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and then with Furig, won 8-5 over Tanabe and Matilde Taborda.
UTSA travels to Hammond, La., Saturday to meet Southeastern Louisiana (3-2, 0-0), which had two rainouts last week.
Texas-Arlington (3-5, 1-0) also got a league victory in a 7-0 blanking of Nicholls State (2-4, 0-2). Marketa Cizova defeated Virginie Villani 6-3, 6-2 and teamed with Lisa Jackson in an 8-0 win over Villani and Sandra Gloria.
The Mavericks have a busy schedule this week with Sam Houston State (2-6, 1-0) and Louisiana-Lafayette on the home docket and a Saturday match at McNeese State (3-2, 0-0). McNeese was idle last week.
SHSU broke a five-match losing streak by downing Nicholls 6-1 Sunday. Ivette Andrade won her No. 1 singles match over NICH's Catherine Gauthier 6-3, 6-0. The duo of Andrade and Kim Gardiner defeated Gauthier/Villani 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.
Stephen F. Austin (1-3, 1-0) earned its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory at home over Lamar (3-8, 0-1). Freshman Jessica Beauchene didn't drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarai Wilson at No. 4 singles.
ULM (3-8, 1-1) split the opening of its Conference slate by downing Southwest Texas 4-0, then losing to UTSA 5-2. The Lady Indians take to the road for three matches this week.
After the loss to UTSA, Northwestern State came back to defeat SWT (1-7, 0-2) Sunday 5-2. The Demons dropped points at No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
Southland Conference Women's Player of the Week
Phyllis Wilunda * Texas-San Antonio * Sr * Nairobi, Kenya Phyllis Wilunda helped Texas-San Antonio to two Southland Conference wins by going undefeated in No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles last week. The senior from Kenya defeated Louisiana-Monroe's Kaori Tanabe 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and Northwestern State's Eliza Young 6-2, 6-4. Then teaming with Svenja Fuhrig, the duo downed ULM's tandem 8-4 and Northwestern's doubles teams 8-5.
