
SFA Track and Field Competes In The Dr. Pepper Invitational

WACO, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin State University track and field team traveled to Waco to compete in the 2001 Dr. Pepper Invitational. Freshmen Nathan Flores (Kingwood, Tex.) Ryan Rossner (Metairie, La.), and sophomore Daniel Longoria (Mission, Tex.) had notable performances on the men's side. The women were led by juniors Misty Ballard (Carlsbad,NM.), Tracy Schupp (Hallsville, Tex.), sophomores Jessica Claiborne (Spring, Tex.), and Ashley-Blake Gordon (Gladewater, Tex.).
Flores, clinched the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 9:17.70. This was his first outdoor meet of the 2001 season to compete in this event. Longoria took first place in the 200m dash as he ran a time of 21.88. Last week Longoria placed second in the 200m dash with 22.89. Ryan Rossner had an outstanding performance in both the shot put and discus throw. Rossner threw (49-03.75) in the shot put to clinch first place. He followed with a fourth place finish in the discus throw (147-00.00).
Ballard continued her success as a pole vaulter with another first place finish. Ballard vaulted 11-11.75. Fellow junior, Schupp, ran 65.78 in the 400 intermediate hurdles to finish in third place. Gordon had two first place finishes in both the shot put (44-07.50) and discus throw (132-06.00). Jessica Claiborne, nominated as the Southland Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week, clinched two second place finishes for the Ladyjacks. Claiborne jumped 18-10.00 in the long jump and 39-06.00 in the triple jump.
The SFA track and field team will be back in action March 30-31 in Houston as they participate in the Rice Invitational at RIce University.
