
Ladyjacks and Lumberjacks Compete Successfully At The College Station Relays

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin State University track and field team competed in the 2001 College Station Relays hosted by Texas A&M University March 15. The Lumberjacks placed eighth out of 19 schools while the Ladyjacks placed ninth out of 17 schools. This was the first outdoor meet of the 2001 season for the SFA track and field team.
On the women's side junior Misty Ballard (Carlsbad, NM), sophomores Blake Gordon (Gladewater, Tex), Jessica Claiborne (Spring, Tex), Melanie Pate (Kaufman, Tex) and Mashay Utley (Houston, Tex) all had notable performances.
Ballard captured first place in the women's pole vault with 3.70M (12-01.50). Ballard just completed the indoor season with a trip to the NCAA Championships and USA Track and Field Competition. Gordon finished fourth in the shot put with 13/73M (45-00.00) and fifth in the discus throw with 45.24M (148-05.00). Claiborne continued the field events success for the Ladyjacks by jumping 11.99M (39-04.00) in the triple jump to place fifth for the day.
In the running events Utley and Pate made their presence known. Utley competed in the 400M dash. She finished in third place with a time of 57.88. Pate participated in the 1500M run and placed fourth overall with a time of 4:55.77.
On the men's side there were also many notable performances by several athletes including senior Ayo-Taylor-Dixon (Katy, Tex), juniors Trenton Hall (Henderson, Tex), Adam Keul (Tyler, Tex), sophomore Paul Todd (Marshall, Tex), freshmen Nathan Flores (Kingwood, Tex) and Justin Meier (Lorena, Tex).
In the field events Keul captured first place in the pole vault with 5.35M (17-06.50). He also finished the indoor season with a trip to the NCAA Championships where he placed second in the nation. Taylor-Dixon placed third in the triple jump after jumping 14.62M (47-11.75). Todd participated in the high jump. He landed himself a third place finish with 2.00M (6-06.75).
Flores had the highest finish for the distance runners with a second place finish in the 5000M run. He completed the race in 14:53.80. Meier and Hall followed Flores in the 5000M run. Meier placed third (14:56.87) and Hall placed sixth (15:14.82).
In the multi-events junior Tracy Schupp (Hallsville, Tex) and freshman Jonathan Roberson (Dawson, Tex) competed successfully. Schupp ended the heptathlon with 4,435 points and a fifth place finish. Roberson competed in the decathlon. He finished with 6,129 points and a ninth place finish.
The SFA track and field team will be back in action Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Dr. Pepper Invitational in Waco, Texas.
