
Southland Conference Weekly Tennis Update

The top two teams in the Southland are headed for a showdown Sunday morning when Texas-San Antonio (7-2, 5-0) travels to Texas-Arlington (7-5, 4-0) for a 9 a.m. match. Both teams could meet with undefeated records to see who will sit alone in first place in the SLC.
UTSA picked up another Conference victory with a 5-2 decision at home over McNeese State (5-5, 2-2) Saturday. The Roadrunners won the doubles point and took four of five singles matches in straight sets. Eva Soderkvist went 6-0, 6-4 over Marlie Leroux at No. 4 for UTSA, then teamed with Emily Foster for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
UTA's only match of the week with Texas Tech was rained out. The Mavericks host Southwest Texas (1-12, 0-5) Saturday at noon.
UTA, the two-time defending Southland Conference regular-season and tournament champion, is facing strong competition from UTSA and Louisiana-Monroe (9-8, 4-1). The Lady Indians have rattled off six straight wins and defeated Southeastern Louisiana (7-4, 3-2) and Nicholls State (3-9, 1-6) in league play.
Before losing to ULM, SLU toppled Northwestern State (6-7, 3-2) last week 5-2, sparked by Anne Mette's come-from-behind victory at No. 1 singles over Brandi Mathews. Mette prevailed 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 and combined with Karin Mohl for an 8-2 No. 2 doubles win.
SLU's top three singles players - Mette, No. 2 Anna Doan and Mohl - are a combined 25-4 this season, including 14-1 in Southland matches.
Northwestern State split its matches, losing to SLU then beating Nicholls 5-2. Natalie Unger has won her last 10 matches at the No. 4 and 5 singles spots.
Megan Taylor won both of her singles matches for McNeese State (5-6, 2-2), including earning a point at No. 6 against UTSA. Paired with Allison Liu, she was 1-1 at No. 3 doubles. The Cowgirls lost to UTSA, but defeated Southwest Texas (1-12, 0-5) 6-1.
Nicholls dropped two Southland matches while Southwest Texas ran its losing streak to nine with three defeats.
Lamar and Sam Houston State were both idle.
Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week - March 19, 2001
Anne Mette * Southeastern Louisiana * Soph * Berlin, Germany Anne Mette won both her No. 1 singles matches to increase her winning streak to six consecutive matches with a 5-0 record in Southland Conference action. She downed ULM's Matilde Taborda in straight sets, then won a hard-fought match against SLU's Brandi Mathews, prevailing 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Mette split her two doubles matches at No. 2 with partner Yessica Rizelia to run her doubles mark to 4-1.
