
Tom Swan Receives A Scholarship

PLANO, Texas ~ Tom Swan of Stephen F. Austin State University, Katy Risinger of the University of Texas at San Antonio and Brandi Mathews of Northwestern State University are the recipients of the 2001 F.L. McDonald Scholarships, the Southland Conference office announced today.
The $1,000 post-graduate scholarships, awarded annually to nominated male and female seniors in the Southland Conference with the highest overall grade point average, will be presented at the Southland,s Honors Luncheon, Friday, March 9, in Shreveport, La. The luncheon is part of the activities surrounding the 2001 CenturyTel Basketball Classic presented by Audiovox Communications.
Risinger and Mathews possess identical 3.86 grade point averages, earning each of them a scholarship. Swan has produced a perfect 4.00 GPA during his collegiate career.
Swan, a native of Ovilla, Texas, placed second in the pole vault at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field championship two weeks ago. He cleared a height of 16-06.75, four inches off the first-place mark, and has provisionally qualified for the NCAA national meet.
Academically, Swan has made the 4.0 President,s List every semester at Stephen F. Austin while majoring in Aviation with a minor in Business Management.
Risinger has excelled in her academic major of economics while helping the UTSA volleyball team to a Southland Conference Tournament championship and appearance in the NCAA Tournament last fall. The Road- runners finished second in the regular season standings and produced an overall record of 24-9. Risinger was the Southland leader in service aces with 49 on her way to being named honorable-mention All-Southland. As a second-team performer in 1999, Risinger helped UTSA to a regular-season championship.
Mathews, a psychology major from Boyce, La., adds the accolade to being named Northwestern,s Athletic Department Academic Sophomore of the Year in 1999. Athletically, Mathews has been Northwestern,s No. 1 singles player in women,s tennis for three years.
In addition to the three above-mentioned award recipients, each Southland university is represented by a male and female as Southland Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year, also recognized at the Honors Luncheon.
