
Southland Conference Weekly Tennis Update

Climbing into the win column for the first time this season were Northwestern State and Southwest Texas. Both squads picked up victories with Northwestern defeating Centenary 5-2 to start the week. The Demons then traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., where they fell to Southern Miss 6-1 Saturday. Later that afternoon, Mississippi Valley State defaulted to Northwestern for their second win.
Southwest Texas was victorious over Louisiana Tech 5-2 Saturday in Denton, Texas. Sara Convery set the stage for the Bobcats' first win of the season by defeating Karen Bass in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 at number three singles. The junior from Fort Smith, Ark., teamed with Sarah Tritt to down La. Tech's number one doubles team 8-3. North Texas defeated SWT the following day 7-0.
Three other Southland sides scored wins as well. McNeese State got past Texas-Pan American 5-2. Yvonne Bresler remained undefeated on the year at 4-0 with wins at both number one singles and doubles.
In Louisiana-Monroe's only match of the week, the Lady Indians won 6-1 over Delta State in their home opener.
Lamar was pounded by Rice 7-0 in straight sets Wednesday. Sophomore Catalina Paz suffered her first loss of the season at number two singles, losing 6-2, 6-0 to go 4-1 overall. Rice also got a win over Sam Houston State 7-0.
LU snapped its three-match losing streak later that day by blanking Texas Southern 7-0. Texas-Pan American got the best of the Cardinals on Sunday with a 5-2 decision.
Texas-Arlington played a pair of nationally ranked teams in No. 51 SMU and No. 25 Arkansas. Although the Mavericks lost by a count of 6-1 in both contests, sophomore Marketa Cizova was successful at number four singles. She came back both times to defeat Chrissie Terrill (SMU) 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Adriana Lopez (UA) 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 to earn player of the week honors.
In Stephen F. Austin's invitational, the Ladyjacks dropped their matches to Trinity 5-2 and Oklahoma Christian 6-1.
Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas-San Antonio were idle.
Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week - Feb. 19, 2001
Marketa Cizova * Texas-Arlington * Soph * Prague, Czech Republic Marketa Cizova recorded a 2-0 week at number four singles for the Mavericks, defeating Chrissie Terrill of No. 51 Southern Methodist 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday. She followed that by downing Adriana Lopez of No. 25-ranked Arkansas 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 on Saturday. Both contests were on the road.
