NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball coach Danny Kaspar has announced the signing of two student-athletes to national letters of intent to play basketball and further their education at the university next fall. Marcus Clark, a 5-10 point guard from Marshall, and Brian Young, 6-3 forward from San Angelo Central High School have both agreed to attend SFA and play basketball for the `Jacks next fall.
"I am obviously very pleased to be able to add young men like Marcus and Brian to our program. Not only are they fine basketball players, but these are also two quality young men. Both will be able to come in and help us right away," said Kaspar.
Marcus Clark will join the Lumberjack program after an outstanding four-year career at Marshall High School. Clark was the District 12-5A Most Valuable Player as a junior, and is a two-time First Team All-District selection entering his senior year. Clark was also voted the Sophomore of the Year in the district two years ago, and was also named to the academic all-district team as a junior. He averaged 18.0 points and six assists per game last season in helping the Mavericks to a district title.
"I'm very happy that we were able to sign a true point guard in the early signing period of Marcus' talent and kill level. I really feel that Marshall's district title is a testament to his talent. Marcus is a true point guard in that he is able to run a team in the way I envision. He is an unselfish player with great offensive skills," said Kaspar.
The second signed is San Angelo Central High school product Brian Young. Young, a 6-3 forward enters his senior season for coach Kevin Pope having lettered all three years at San Angelo Central. After earning First Team All-District honors as a freshman, Young was also named the District Newcomer and Freshman of the Year. In his first three years, Young has helped his team to 73 wins while posting a career average of 20.1 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game. Young was also voted the District 4-5A MVP last year as a junior. The 6-3 forward is the all-time leading scorer, rebounder, shot blocker and three-point shooter in San Angelo Central history.
"Brian Young is another young man that brings a lot to the table. Not only can he handle himself inside with a great ability to score, but he can also move outside, beyond the three-point line and score from there, as well. With ransom White graduating following the season, we needed to sign someone of his abilities. I really feel that we will be able to count on Brian's ability to score for us in the coming years," said Kaspar.
The Lumberjack coaching staff expects to add at least one more signee during the early signing period. SFA opens the 2001-02 season Saturday afternoon as they take on Arizona State in Tempe.
