
Lumberjack Harriers Win Conference Title; Women Finish Fifth

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Host university Stephen F. Austin State outpaced the field of 10 other teams to capture the 2001 Southland Conference men's cross country championship title while the University of Texas at Arlington repeated as women's champion.
The Lumberjacks won the 38th-annual men's meet with 52 points, upending defending champion McNeese State University, which finished second with 66 points. UTA finished third in the men's competition with 81 points, followed by Sam Houston State University (118) and Southwest Texas State University (125).
In women's competition, the Lady Mavs won their second team title in a row and third in the last five years with 66 points. The University of Louisiana-Monroe finished second with 73 points while SWT was third (77), the University of Texas at San Antonio (94) fourth and SFA (102) fifth at the 17th-annual women's championship.
Individually, Randy Arias of SWT won the men's 8,000-meter men's race with a time of 24:59. The junior from Fredericksburg, Texas, finished second last year, one second out of first place. Nathan Flores, a sophomore from Kingwood, Texas, led the Lumberjacks to a team title with a second-place showing, crossing the line in 25:14. Kris Gilmore of McNeese State University was third with a time of 25:16.
On the women's side, Sita Waru of McNeese State, captured her third-consecutive women's title with a time of 17:20. The senior from Waimana, New Zealand, finished the 5,000-meter course 17 seconds faster than second-place Rebecca Johansson of UTA. Rnonda Sherrer of ULM finished third with a mark of 18:04.
