Nacogdoches - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team took a break from the conference schedule Tuesday night to play a make-up game against Centenary. After two overtime periods, the match finished in a 1-1 tie. The Ladyjacks are 6-3-1 overall on the season.
Trailing by a goal with under 10 minutes to play SFA went on the offensive sending everyone forward. SFA senior Jessica Messner (Plano, Texas) nailed the game-saving goal at the 86-minute, 41-second mark. That would turn out to be the last goal of the match as neither team would surrender a goal in two overtime periods.
Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Evatt (Plano, Texas) was solid in net allowing only one goal and recording a season-high 11 saves. The goal came at the 28:59 mark of the first half and Evatt responded by shutting out the Ladies for the next 91:01.
"A tie is better than a loss," said SFA head coach Lance Noble. "We easily had five chances to win this match in regulation and just didn't get it done. We squandered three more chances to get the win in overtime, two of those were from only eight yards out. The shot total was fairly even in this match but I think mentally we just didn't have the edge. Evatt and Messner both played great tonight."
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday night against Southeastern Louisiana. The rematch is slated to begin at 4 p.m., from Hammond, La.
