CONTACT: Joshua McLain
NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- Sophomore Adam Keul has been at the top and bottom this track and field season in the indoor and outdoor pole vault event, but when it counts the most he leaps into a class of his own.
Keul's recent success was a first-place finish was at the Sam Houston Quad Meet in Huntsville where he recorded a 17-7' school-record breaking vault. For his efforts, the Tyler product earned provisional NCAA qualifier status.
Earlier, at the Southwest Texas Invitational, Keul placed second in his event with a 17-03' mark (5.26m) and a week later took top honors at the Rice Bayou Classic. Keul traveled to Austin for his third meet to compete with some of the nation's best at the Texas Relays. Keul took eight place with a vault of 16-8' (5.10m) but came back to record his second-best score of the season with 17-04' (5.30m) at the SFA Twilight Invitational.
"Adam brings a high level of talent with huge potential to our program," head coach Phil Olson said. "He is only now figuring out that he can be one of the best pole vaulters in America."
Keul's second-best jump at home was short-lived as the sophomore went to vault with more of the country's best at the Michael Johnson/SWB Open and finished fourth among the field. The fierce competition only made the vaulter work harder in practice and as a result broke the school record and has a chance to make the NCAAs. Keul is among the top ten collegiate vaulters in the nation
During the fall indoor competition Keul was also a dominating force. The vaulter won the first event of the year in December at the University of Oklahoma All-Comers Meet with 17-03' (5.25m). Keul earned provisional NCAA qualifier for the vault and went on to repeat his first place finish at the Bayou City Indoor Meet in Houston.
