2000-2001 SEASON OPENER
A new era begins when the Lumberjacks host Loyola-Chicago Sunday afternoon in the Coliseum. Danny Kaspar took over in March, when he was named the tenth head coach in the history of the Lumberjack basketball program.
The `Jacks hope to get off on the right foot Sunday afternoon against a Loyola-Chicago team that finished the `99-2000 season at 14-14, including a 78-58 win over the `Jacks in Chicago. SFA returns five lettermen off last year's 6-21 team, led by seniors Ron Banks and Emanuel Jackson. Banks returns after leading the team in scoring last season, averaging 14.1 points per game, while Jackson returns as the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 8.0 rebounds per game.
Kaspar has taken a ground zero approach in rebuilding a Lumberjack program that has not qualified for the Southland Conference post season tournament since the 1996-97 season. SFA has gone 10-43 over the past two years, winning only five conference games. Prior to returning to the SFA campus, Kaspar spent nine seasons as the head coach at Incarnate Word, posting a 219-52 record.
As practice began earlier this fall, no one had a starting position guaranteed. With seven new additions to the Lumberjack roster this year, SFA begins the season with optimism and the hope of improved play. The `Jacks split their exhibition games, dropping the first to Athletes First 86-80, and defeating Team Ezybonds 71-60, last Tuesday.
THE OPPONENT
Loyola-Chicago enters the 2000-2001 season hoping to improve on last year's 14-14 record. The Ramblers jumped out to an 8-2 start last season, the best start in 10 seasons, but fell to 6-12 over the latter part of the season.
Only two seniors dot the Rambler roster, with only one, Schinn Kerr, a 6-8 forward, seeing substantial playing time last season. Kerr led the Ramblers in rebounding, averaging 5.0 rebounds per game. He also added 8.4 points per game.
Two other starters also return, G David Bailey and G Jerell Parker. Bailey led the team in assists last season (4.1 apg) and added 8.8 ppg to lead all returnees, while Parker added 8.3 ppg.
Bailey came off the bench last year against the `Jacks to lead Loyola-Chicago with 17 points in 16 minutes.
