Tony Gilbert enters his second season as a member of the SFA coaching staff, handling the Lumberjacks’ cornerback unit.
During his first year in Texas’ oldest town, coach Gilbert led a veteran cornerback group that featured three seniors and a junior. Seniors Trent Perriman, Aaron Foy and Tarrin Mitchell, along with junior Davelle Fox, combined to start all 11 games at the position as the trio of seniors totaled 19 of SFA’s 41 pass breakups in 2017. Under Gilbert’s mentorship, Perriman claimed Southland Conference All-Academic Team honors and started all 11 games during his senior year, leading all Lumberjack defenders with 11 pass breakups and ranking fourth on the team in both total tackles (56) and solo stops (36).
Prior to arriving in Nacogdoches, Gilbert spent three seasons at Eastern Illinois where he served as the Panthers’ special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach. During his time in Charleston, Illinois, Gilbert helped lead EIU to the 2015 FCS playoffs as the Panthers’ defensive unit ranked third in the FCS in turnovers gained.
Before his time at Eastern Illinois, Gilbert completed his second stint at Southern Arkansas as the Muleriders’ special teams coordinator, secondary coach and recruiting coordinator in 2013. While in Magnolia, Arkansas, Gilbert worked alongside fellow SFA assistant coach Josh Lawson. Gilbert’s first go-around at Southern Arkansas came from 1997-2000, where he worked with the Muleriders’ defensive backs.
From 2011-12, Gilbert was on staff at Louisiana-Monroe where he coached the Warhawks’ secondary, helping ULM to rank first in the Sun Belt Conference and among the top 25 nationally in both rushing and total defense. Prior to his time in Louisiana, Gilbert spent nine seasons at Arkansas State from 2003-10, working as the Red Wolves’ defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator. While in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Gilbert coached five players who signed NFL contracts.
Gilbert spent two seasons (2001-02) at Central Arkansas before heading to Arkansas State, serving as the Bears’ assistant head coach and leading UCA’s wide receiving corps. During his time in Conway, Arkansas, Gilbert helped the Bears to rank among the top 10 nationally in both passing offense and total defense, while aiding UCA to its first-ever NCAA Division II playoff appearance in 2001.
Prior to Gilbert’s two years at UCA and his first time on staff at Southern Arkansas, he spent five seasons at Southeast Missouri (1992-96) coaching the Redhawks’ running backs. Gilbert’s first coaching experience came at his alma mater, Missouri State, where he worked worked with the running back group as a graduate assistant for two seasons.
A four-year letter winner at running back for Missouri State, Gilbert earned his bachelor’s degree in 1989, followed by his master’s degree in 1991. Following his time as a student in Springfield, Missouri, Gilbert signed a free agent contract with the New York Giants in the summer of 1991 before beginning his coaching career.
Gilbert is married to the former Regina Kuykendall as the two have been married for 31 years. They have a daughter, Jackie, and son, Tony, who is a member of the Lumberjack football team as a tight end.
