Jeremy Hammock is in his fifth season at SFA and will oversee the Lumberjacks’ running back corps in 2018 after serving as the SFA’s tight ends coach over the last four seasons. He also serves as a co-special teams coordinator, in charge of the Lumberjacks’ kickoff returns since 2014 after handling SFA’s punt returns during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
For the second time in his career Hammock will work with running backs, having coached the position for three years at fellow Southland Conference member Central Arkansas from 2011-13 before arriving in Texas’ oldest town.
During the 2017 season, Hammock was instrumental in the develop of senior tight end Will Taylor, who was SFA’s primary receiver at that position. Taylor racked up 101 yards on 10 catches and scored a pair of touchdowns to cap a four-year career which included 45 games played, 19 starts, 22 catches, 242 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Most impressively, the Lumberjacks ranked third nationally and second in the Southland in 2017 in kickoff returns. Under Hammock’s guidance, SFA set a single-season program record by averaging 26.45 yards per kickoff return, recording 1,058 yards on 40 kickoff returns. In the season opener at SMU, the ‘Jacks set a single-game school record by notching 270 yards on nine kickoff returns. Sophomore Alize Ward ranked 13th in the nation and second in the league with a kickoff return average of 25.0 yards per return, claiming 726 kickoff return yards on the season, while redshirt freshman Josh McGowen averaged a team-best 29.9 yards per kickoff return and posted 209 yards on seven kickoff returns.
Hammock’s tight ends were a key component of the Lumberjack offense in 2016 as the trio of Taylor, Nick Jones and Lucas Askew combined for 17 catches for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also providing crucial pass and run blocking. On special teams, junior Trae Hart ranked among the nation's leaders in punt return average at 12.4 yards per return, earning All-Southland Second Team honors.
In 2015, Hammock led a tight end corps that played a major role in SFA’s offensive scheme, the group providing key blocking and other aspects that didn’t always show in the box score. From a special teams standpoint, the ‘Jacks were among the conference leaders in returns, led by Robert Sylvester’s 21.1 kickoff return average. SFA was also one of a few teams in the nation to not have a kick blocked in 2015, while registering five blocked kicks of its own.
With Hammock in charge of the position, the Lumberjacks’ tight ends added a new wrinkle to the offense in 2014 as the trio of Danan Henderson, Jayson Clements and Taylor played a major part in SFA’s run to the FCS playoffs. In addition to providing key blocking for Walter Payton Award finalist Gus Johnson and 2014 Southland Newcomer of the Year Zach Conque, the tight end squad accounted for 169 receiving yards and three touchdowns on the season.
Before joining the UCA staff in Conway, Arkansas, Hammock spent two seasons at Louisiana-Monroe, his alma mater, working as a graduate assistant from 2009-10 in charge of the Warhawks’ offensive line. While in Monroe, Louisiana, Hammock also served as an assistant director of football operations. Hammock began his coaching career at Trinity Valley Community College, where he served as the director of football operations in addition to leading both the wide receivers and tight ends.
A four-year letter winner at ULM, Hammock was a two-year starter at tight end and helped lead the Warhawks to the 2005 Sun Belt Championship.
Hammock earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies from ULM in 2006 and is married to Markia. The two welcomed their first son, Jace, in the spring of 2015 and their second son, Masen, in the summer of 2017.
