Ben Beasley enters his second season at Stephen F. Austin, overseeing the Lumberjacks’ safety corps, after joining the staff in January of 2017.
In his first year, coach Beasley guided SFA’s top three tacklers as freshman Trenton Gordon, sophomore Alize Ward and senior Marlon Walls combined for 211 total tackles. The trio also had seven tackles for loss and 13 pass breakups with two fumble recoveries in 2017. Gordon posted a team-high 76 tackles and ranked ninth in the Southland Conference in tackles per game (7.6). Ward claimed All-Southland Second Team accolades after tallying 75 total tackles, including a team-best 40 solo stops, and 10 pass breakups, while racking up 122 yards on four interceptions for the second-most interception return yards in the league. Walls, a William V. Campbell Trophy® Finalist and SFA’s first CoSIDA Academic All-American® of the Year in any sport, notched 60 tackles, had three pass breakups, a quarterback hurry and a fumble recovery.
Beasley brought a large amount of familiarity with the Southland to Nacogdoches, working at four other conference schools previously. He came to Texas’ oldest town from Lamar where he spent three seasons with the Cardinals, working with the secondary unit. Under Beasley’s tutelage, Lamar saw significant improvement in the defensive backfield, leading the Southland in passing defense in 2016.
Prior to his time in Beaumont, Beasley spent five seasons at rival Sam Houston State, coaching the Bearkat defensive backs from 2009-13. During his time at Sam Houston State, Beasley’s secondary emerged as one of the nation’s best, leading the nation in interceptions and takeaways and ranking fourth in pass defense efficiency in 2011 as the Bearkats claimed national runner-up honors. Beasley also helped guide Sam Houston State back to the national championship game in 2012, gaining familiarity of the significance of the annual Battle of the Piney Woods showdown in Houston. During his time in Huntsville, Beasley coached three All-Americans and 11 All-Southland selections.
Beasley is also very familiar with the significance of SFA’s other rivalry game, spending seven years at Northwestern State from 2002-08, competing against the Lumberjacks each season in the annual Battle for Chief Caddo. During his time in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Beasley was instrumental in the development of six All-Southland performers and helped the Demons emerge as one of the conference’s top defensive teams, ranking in the top-two in total defense three-straight seasons and ranking first in 2008.
Beasley began his coaching career at another Southland rival, spending three seasons as a student assistant at McNeese. He was on the Cowboys staff for the 2001 and 2002 Southland championship teams and helped mentor three All-Americans and 17 All-Southland football players, including 2001 Southland Defensive Player of the Year Joe Judge.
A native of Houston, Beasley graduated from McNeese in 2002. He and his wife, Ellen, have one daughter, Sarah Jane.
