![]() STEPHEN F. AUSTIN CONCUSSION PROTOCOL Concussions are a health issue taken very seriously at Stephen F. Austin. Since 2008, SFA has utilized ImPACT, a neurocognitive computer baseline test. All student-athletes are tested before entering SFA's athletic program and later retested against their baseline if a head injury is suspected. SFA recently added a second layer of concussion baseline-testing specifically designed to be utilized at the time a suspected concussion episode is identified. X2-ICE provides real tiime, multi-factor baseline comparison for rapid highlighting of post-injury deficiencies that help to verify or dismiss a suspected concussion. This tool has helped make the concussion diagnosis, management and return-to-play decisions more reliable. In 2014, Stephen F. Austin and Nacogdoches Medical Center teamed up to provide enhanced medical care to all SFA student-athletes. The two entered into a three-year partnership to help fund X2 Biosystems, a concussion software program which allows for on-site determination of concussions as well as protocol for how to treat them. The system is the same that is used by the National Football League, the Department of Defense and a number of FBS programs across the country as SFA was the first Southland Conference school to implement the software package. The NCAA recommends all colleges and universities develop a concussion management plan and utilize the suggested guidelines Stephen F. Austin implemented in its plan. The SFA plan is a graduated program focusing on both student-athletes return-to-play and academic return to the classroom. LINKS • 2017-18 SFA Sports Medicine Concussion Protocol |
