SFA Approves Plans for Athletic Training & Academic Center
July 17, 2003
NACOGDOCHES - A new athletic training and student-athlete academic center has been approved for construction by the Stephen F. Austin Board of Regents. The new 5,300 square foot facility will be constructed on the north side of the current fieldhouse at the site of the old weight room.
The new athletic training area will compliment SFA's new master's degree program in athletic training. Approximately ten graduate students will begin the program this fall which will be the first of its kind in Texas.
"We have the smallest athletic training facility in our conference, and we do not have academic space," said SFA Vice President for University Affairs Dr. Baker Pattillo. "We cannot receive national accreditation for our master's program without adequate facilities."
The academic center will serve approximately 325 student-athletes on a daily basis and allow greater flexibility to student-athletes for study hall and tutoring as well as giving them more access to computers.
Construction of the new facility is set to get underway this coming fall.
