SFA matches most home wins since 2019, moves a game up on the Cowboys for sixth place
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin split Saturday's doubleheader with McNeese bouncing back after a 6-1 loss in game one to win 7-4 in the nightcap. The decisions keep the Jacks a game up on the Cowboys in the Southland Conference standings.
The Jacks deployed Cody Templeton who went a strong 7.0 innings scattering three hits and three walks, while allowing only one run with eight strikeouts. Reid Bowyer worked the eighth and an out in the ninth, before Jack James fended off the Cowboys, who plated three runs in the ninth, to split the day.
SFA hit three home runs in game two with Cermodrick Bland's solo shot tying the game at 1-1 in the first. Josh Ibe exited Pilgrim's Park twice on Saturday night: a pair of solo blasts that left in right field in the third and seventh innings.
RBI singles by Cooper Schneider and Bland in the second accounted for three runs with the latter's plating two for a 4-1 lead through three. Juan Cantua reached on a fielder's choice that also scored a run in the fourth.
The Cowboys took the series opener 6-1 behind ten hits and an eight-inning, nine-strikeout effort from starter Eric Nachtsheim. He allowed just four hits and a walk. Gabriel LeBlanc went 5.0 innings for the Jacks with three strikeouts and stranded Cowboys in the first, second and fourth innings, while not allowing a run until the fifth. McNeese added one run in the sixth to its three-run fifth inning and produced two more in the pre-stretch seventh.
The Jacks ended the shutout in the ninth as Mark Henning extended his reached base streak in his final at bat with an RBI single that plated Julian Swift.
