Full squad set for action in Houston as the first of two final tune-ups await Jacks on Saturday
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Two meets remain in the regular season for Stephen F. Austin track and field with the first scheduled for Saturday in Houston at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight. Following last week's distance-only effort out west in California at the prestigious Bryan Clay Invite, the Jacks are set to carry a full squad to the one-day meet hosted by Rice.
Field events jumpstart the day with the men's hammer and women's javelin beginning at 10 a.m., while the women's shot put and men's discus bookend the throws and jumps action with a 6 p.m. start. The afternoon session of running fires off at 2:30 p.m. with the women's 100mH, while the 4:25 start of the men's 200m brings an end to the afternoon sprint events. Following the 5:30 recognition of Rice seniors, the 4x100 relays begin at 6 p.m. and signal the start of over four hours of track action capped off by the final heat of the men's 5000m scheduled for a 10:25 gun.
Rice will serve as host for a lengthy list of Lone Star State opposition including Blinn College, Dallas Baptist, Dallas Christian, East Texas A&M, Hill College, Houston, Houston Christian, Huston-Tillotson, Jacksonville College, Lamar, Our Lady of the Lake, Sam Houston, Southwestern Christian, St. Edward's, SFA, TAMU-Kingsville, Texas Southern, Texas State, Texas Southmost College, UT Dallas, UT Tyler and Victoria College. Louisiana will be the lone program in action not from the great state of Texas.
The SFA men are currently ranked #122 in the country as of the April 21 release of the National TFRI. SFA rated a season-high #93 in the Week 1 rankings; its second-highest ranking of the past three seasons. The Jacks are currently leading the SLC with a score of 933.56 and with 18 performances currently rating inside the top five of the Southland this spring. One third of those results rank as the best effort in the SLC.
Highlighting the Jacks' collective 3.62 points garnered in the national ranking is Samuel Pavan's 2.81 points earned following his third-place finish in the decathlon at the 44 Farms Invitational. That effort earned Pavan Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors, ranks as the third-highest total in outdoor program history and is currently the #21 result in the nation.
Three additional top 50 marks nationally have the Jacks inside the nation's top 125. Bryson Williams' triple jump (15.65m at Clyde Hart Classic), Jarvis Anderson's 400mH (51.08 at 44 Farms Invite) and Hunter Murphy's high jump (2.13m at Clyde Hart Classic) have combined for .81 points on the national rankings.
The efforts by Williams and Anderson are the top marks in the Southland Conference entering the last weekend in April, while Murphy's mark ranks fourth. Additional SLC-leading results include Paul Kiprotich who has clocked the league's top times in both the 5000m (14:00.30) and 10000m (29:01.44) events. Kason Reed's 17.79m in the shot put at the Carl Kight Invite leads all SLC shot putters.
The Jacks hold seven top 50 event squad rankings paced by the 10000m group (16th nationally) and followed by pole vault (23rd), shot put (24th), hammer (32nd), discus (39th), high jump (46th) and 800m (47th).
The SFA women rate 177th in the Week 4 National TFRI rankings. The Jacks are currently second in the Southland Conference. SFA currently has four event squads inside the nation's top 50 which includes the 10000m (12th nationally), pole vault (35th), discus (#42) and the 5000m (43rd).
SFA has a dozen top three performances in the Southland led by Valentine Jemutai's first-place efforts in the 5000m (33:58.33) and 10000m (16:27.90) events. Mercy Kipchumba's 5000m (16:28.22) follows Jemutai.
Basia Mitchell's 5296 points in the heptathlon is currently the second-best result among SLC multis this spring. The result is currently the lone event registering on the national rankings giving the Jacks .05 points as Mitchell's heptathlon result is currently inside the nation's top 50. She also owns the third-longest long jump performance (5.98m) in the SLC. Reis Johnson and Christine Schick are both tied for the highest pole vault result (3.67m) in the SLC this season.
Jemutai's top SLC marks are also new program standards, while first-year Jack Evaline Chepkoech has also rewritten the record book with the fastest times ever by an SFA female in the 800m (2:04.67) and 1500m (4:21.73).
