
Jacks Earn Battle of the Piney Woods Win over Bearkats

A five-run fifth inning powers SFA to an 8-4 win over Sam Houston.
SFA struck first in the top of the first inning with an RBI single from Adelyn Becerra to score Kaylee Paul, 1-0. Sam Houston responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run, 2-1. Both pitchers recorded a three up, three down second inning. The Jacks tied it back up in the top of the third after Jamie Varga stole home on a double steal, 2-2. Amelia Hatthorn shut down the Bearkats in the bottom of the third to keep the score tied at two. SFA tacked on another run in the top of the fourth as Lilly Bean hit a single to center to score Malia Jones, 3-2. SHSU tied it back up in the bottom of the fourth off a solo home run, 3-3.
A five-run fifth inning began with a two-RBI single to the gap in right center from Jones to score Ellie Vance and Kaylee Paul, 5-3. After a pitching change from the Bearkats, Kylie Bishop capitalized on a miscue from the Sam Houston defense which scored SFA's sixth run of the game, 6-3. Alexis Grigsby followed that up with her first collegiate RBI with a single to left field to bring in Jones, 7-3. Varga added another run with an RBI single to second to cap off the inning, 8-3. Sam Houston added another run in the bottom of the fifth with another solo home run, 8-4. Crimson Bryant came on in relief for Hatthorn and kept the Bearkats off the board for the rest of the game.
POSTGAME NOTES
• SFA has won three of the previous four games against the Lumberjacks.
• Malia Jones led the team with two RBIs with five other Jacks recording one RBI.
• Kaylee Paul led the team with three hits, going 3-4 with a double and two runs scored.
• Jones, Jamie Varga, and Adelyn Becerra each recorded two hits.
• In the circle, Amelia Hatthorn earned her fourth win of the season with 4.2 innings pitched and four strikeouts.
• Crimson Bryant pitched 2.1 innings in relief and allowed one hit and struck out two batters.

SFA will prepare for their next conference series this weekend at Lamar beginning on Friday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m. followed by the second game of the doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.
