Lydia Cajuste’s Buzzer Beater Lifts Ladyjacks over Cardinals

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team wrapped up their four-game homestand against Lamar in their annual Play4Kay game.
Lamar capped off a 6-0 run with a three-pointer to take an early 10-6 lead with 5:28 left in the first quarter. Both teams traded blows until the Cardinals drained a last second three to take a 18-12 lead into the first quarter break.
SFA began the second quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the Lamar lead down to two, 20-18. With 6:07 left in the first half, the Ladyjacks went on a 5-0 run that included a layup from Myka Perry and an and-one from Key Roseby. The Ladyjacks would not be stopped as a little over a minute later, they began an 8-0 run that was capped off by back-to-back three-pointers from Kaylinn Kemp and Harmanie Dominguez, 31-25. Lamar made another three before the Ladyjacks finished the first half on another 8-0 spurt including a three from Lydia Cajuste with 18 second left in the first half. SFA went into the locker room with an 11-point lead, 39-28.
The Ladyjacks scored the first four points of the second half before Lamar went on a 9-0 run to pull within six points, 43-37 with 4:59 left in the third. Back-to-back layups from Aziyah Farrier and Kemp brought SFA's lead back to double figures, 47-37. With 1:50 left in the third quarter, the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run that included four made free throws to make it a one-point game, 49-48. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker made two from the charity stripe with four seconds left to send the Ladyjacks to the final quarter with a slim three-point lead.
In the fourth quarter, neither team scored until the 6:12 mark when the Kemp made a layup to extend the SFA lead to five. Lamar began their fourth quarter comeback with 4:10 left in the game as they went on another 8-0 scoring run to retake the lead late, 57-55. With less than a second on the clock, SFA inbounded the ball from their bench with Ashlyn Traylor-Walker. Traylor-Walker gets the ball into Cajuste who quickly turns, shoots it from the SFA logo and drains the game-winning buzzer beater.
POSTGAME NOTES
• SFA splits the season series with Lamar with each team winning on their home court.
• Lydia Cajuste followed in her husband's steps with her game winner as AJ won SFA Men's Basketball's first round matchup against ACU in the 2024 WAC Tournament.
• Kaylinn Kemp led the team with 17 points, four assists and was second on the team with seven rebounds.
• Key Roseby led the Ladyjacks with nine boards.
• Cha Gardner recorded two blocks against the Cardinals.
• Three Ladyjacks were perfect from the free throw line and Cajuste was a perfect 2-2 from beyond the arc.
