Jordyn Ages and Amelia Hatthorn combine for SFA’s third straight shutout in the first game of the day before SFA falls to UCA to end the day.
RUSTON La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team wrapped up their final non-conference tournament at the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Classic.
Game 1: SFA 5, UNI 0
SFA got on the board in the second inning after Kyi'Marri Ester hit a leadoff single to right then stole second base to put a runner in scoring position for Kaylee Paul. Paul smoked a single back up the middle to score Ester from second, 1-0. The next Lumberjack runs came in the fourth after a Lilly Bean double to left center and a walk by Alexis Grigsby, who drew her first collegiate start, brought back Paul to the plate. Paul made the most of her at bat as she slapped a home run over the right field wall for her first collegiate home run, 4-0.
Both pitchers recorded scoreless fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, SFA scratched across another insurance run after a leadoff double from Jamie Varga and a sacrifice bunt from Kylie Bishop allowed Ellie Vance to bring in Varga on a groundout, 5-0. Amelia Hatthorn came into the circle in relief of Jordyn Ages in the bottom of the fifth and shut the door on the Panthers as she recorded a three-up, three-down seventh inning.
Game 2: UCA 5, SFA 3
The second game of the day quickly turned into a pitcher's duel between Crimson Bryant and Jaleigh White as both recorded four scoreless innings. SFA struck first after a leadoff double from Kara Pride and a defensive miscue from the Bears allowed Bean to reach safely and Pride to score, 1-0. Ester then drew a walk on a wild pitch that allowed pinch runner Grigsby to advance to third to put runners on the corners. Malia Jones hit a sacrifice fly to right field foul territory to score Grigsby, 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Bryant got out of her second bases loaded jam with a swinging strikeout. In the top of the sixth, Vance smoked a triple through the right side which allowed Adelyn Becerra to score her on a sacrifice fly, 3-0. The UCA Bears once again got the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, but this time they took advantage as they scored five runs to take a 5-3 lead. The Jacks were unable to mount a comeback as they were sat down in order in the seventh.
