Hansen named men’s COTY, Kiprotich honored as Newcomer of the Year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Chalk it up as another successful season indoors for the Stephen F. Austin track and field teams as the Lumberjack men defended their league title totaling 157 points (+34) to claim a fifth Southland Conference indoor championship, while the SFA women placed second behind three individual champions.
Robert Hansen earned SLC Men's Coach of the Year honors for the second-straight season and Paul Kiprotich was named the league's Newcomer of the Year, the first for the SFA men indoors.

Evaline Chepkoech won the 800m with a time of 2:10.49 to give the SFA women ten points and Keyshawn Garcia matched the podium finish in the men's 800m with a first-place time of 1:51.14, while Bennett Meyer-Wills (1:53.56) and Riley Elliott (1:55.26) placed sixth and eighth to add another four points to the SFA ledger.
Like Chepkoech, Basia Mitchell continued her points grab for the SFA women adding three more points with a sixth-place finish (8.59) in the 60mH; the sixth-fastest time in program history. Kennedy Swann scored four points as her time of 7.52 in the 60m event placed her fifth; tied for the fourth-fastest time in SFA indoor history.
The Lumberjack women handled the 1 mile as Evaline Chepkoech placed third as one of three runners to break the previous SLC meet record as she did so with a time of 4:42.21. Mercy Kipchumba finished in sixth (4:50.14), the third fastest SFA female ever in the run, and Valentine Jemutai (4:50.69) placed seventh to give the Jacks 11 points in the event. Jemutai (9:47.58), Kipchumba (9:47.95) and Trude Lamb (9:59.13) crossed in the fourth, sixth and eighth spots, respectively, in the women's 3000m as the Jacks totaled nine points in the event.
Faith Nze claimed five points in the triple jump as her mark of 11.58m (38) placed her fourth. Bryson Williams won the triple jump behind a top 50 mark in DI of 15.58m (51-1.5) and Jarvis Anderson placed eighth at 14.58m (47-10)
While the Lumberjack men didn't podium in the 1 mile, they cleaned up the rest of the scoring as Pablo Lesarri (4:11.61), Nathan Kapel (4:11.79), Robert Fuelle (4:14.10) and Elliott (4:15.11) placed fourth through seventh to earn 14 points. In the men's 3000m, Kiprotich claimed the gold medal with a finish of 8:15.14, Devon Judelson followed for the silver in 8:15.72 and Ryan Binskin placed fourth at 8:17.28 as SFA added 23 points to the team total.
Samuel Pavan capped an impressive two-day effort in the heptathlon as he posted second-place finishes in the 60mH (8.37) and pole vault (4.70m) and a fourth-place result in the 1000m run (2:51.39) to claim the silver medal and eight points. He totaled 5485 points; the second-most ever scored by a Lumberjack in the event. Ayden Colbert earned an eighth-place result as this Thursday effort was highlighted by a sixth-place result in the 60mH (8.73) to pick up an additional point for the Jacks.
In the men's shot put, SFA went 3-4-8 as James Williams led a trio of point-scoring Jacks with a third-place result of 17.24m (56-6.75) which stands as the fifth-furthest effort in SFA indoor history. Kason Reed followed closely in fourth place at 17.21m (56-5.75), the sixth-longest ever, and Julian Tijerina placed eighth at 16.28m (53-5).
In the women's 4x400m, SFA placed seventh as the squad of Alana Rouquette, Mya Sanders, Lauren Creaby and Jovonah Rhodes finished in 3:51.41. The SFA men burned to a first-place finish as Mason Roseboro, Keyshawn Garcia, Johnny Banks III and Jarvis Anderson earned ten points behind the third-fastest time in SFA indoor history at 3:10.93.
