LION LOOKOUT
Southeastern Louisiana enters its Oct. 24 trip to SFA 4–3 overall and 2–2 in Southland Conference play, having won four of its last five games after an 0–2 start. Following losses to HCU (34–28) and South Alabama (39–14), the Lions defeated North Alabama (30–25), ULM (38–35) and Northwestern State (52–21) before falling at UTRGV (13–3). The Sept. 19 victory at ULM marked SLU's first win over an FBS opponent, highlighted by Dkhai Joseph's 78-yard punt return touchdown. Southeastern rebounded from the UTRGV loss by upsetting No. 8/10 Lamar, 34–31, on Homecoming—its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2022. The win came in Frank Scelfo's 100th game leading the Lions and helped SLU return to the national polls at No. 23 in Stats Perform and No. 24 in the AFCA rankings.Â
The Lions' offense features a balanced rushing attack that ranks second in the Southland at 172.3 yards per game, while averaging 28.4 points and 341.4 total yards. Quarterback Kyle Lowe has completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 1,162 yards and 10 touchdowns, adding 209 rushing yards and three scores. His mobility proved decisive against Lamar, when he rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns as SLU accumulated 224 yards and four scores on the ground. Deantre Jackson leads the team with 303 rushing yards, followed by Chad Elzy with 282, while Kyree Paul averages 6.9 yards per carry and supplied a 60-yard touchdown against the Cardinals. Defensively, Southeastern ranks fourth in the conference against the run, allowing 148.0 yards per game. Carter Hanberry leads the Lions with 60 tackles, tying for third in the Southland at 8.6 per game.
The Lions lead the FCS in net punting at 43.86 yards, with Jack Hunter averaging 45.18 yards on 22 punts, including seven of at least 50 yards and eight downed inside the 20. Joseph is a particularly dangerous player to watch, ranking third nationally and first among qualifying Southland players with a 22.0-yard punt return average; his 14 returns have produced 308 yards and two touchdowns. He also leads SLU's receivers with 32 catches for 325 yards and two scores. Kicker Drew Talley earned Southland Special Teams Player of the Week honors following the Lamar win after making all four extra points and fourth-quarter field goals of 37 and 39 yards, providing the final six points in the three-point victory.Â
WEEKLY PRESSERS
HC Colby Carthel:Â WATCH HERE
RECORD BREAKING IN THE BAYOU
>>> SLC SHUTOUT: SFA's 56–0 victory at Nicholls marked its first shutout of a Southland Conference opponent since a 33–0 win at Northwestern State on November 19, 2011. The 56-point margin also established the largest victory in the SFA–Nicholls series, surpassing the Jacks' 56–3 win in 1995.
>>> CAREERÂ FIRSTS: Cam Brooks recorded his first career interception to preserve the fourth-quarter shutout, while Braden Lewis scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 28-yard reception from Bryson Broadway. JT Kitna and Speedy Jones each recorded their first career 100-yard rushing game, finishing with 102 and 100 yards, respectively.
>>> 625-PLUS UNDER CARTHEL: The Lumberjacks generated 642 yards of total offense—354 rushing and 288 passing—for their second game with at least 625 yards under Colby Carthel. The performance trails only SFA's 675-yard effort against North American in the 2024 season opener and marks its highest total against a Division I opponent during his tenure.
>>> GROUND CONTROL: SFA's 354 rushing yards established a new high under Carthel and marked the program's largest rushing output since totaling 373 against UIW in 2014. The Jacks averaged 8.9 yards on 40 carries, with Kitna and Jones combining for 202 yards on just 13 attempts.
>>> THREE TIMES THE BUGS: Bugs Mortimer caught six passes for 103 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, scoring from 21, 30 and 13 yards—all before halftime. He became the first Lumberjack with three touchdown receptions in a game since Kylon Harris against Texas A&M-Commerce on September 30, 2023, and the third different Jack to record a 100-yard receiving game this season.
>>> KYLON'S HISTORIC HOMECOMING: Louisiana native Kylon Harris reached two career milestones in his home state, becoming SFA's all-time receptions leader and the third player in program history with 3,000 receiving yards. His 34-yard touchdown catch carried him past the yardage milestone, while his final reception established the career catches record. Harris finished with three receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown, bringing his career totals to 244 catches and 3,028 yards. The Louisiana native capped his final regular-season trip to the Pelican State with 35 career catches for 519 yards and five touchdowns in games played in his home state, including 100-yard receiving efforts at Southeastern Louisiana (10/19/24), Northwestern State (11/20/25) and Nicholls (11/2/24).
>>> GOING THE DISTANCE: JT Kitna's 94-yard touchdown run established the longest rush in SFA history, eclipsing Joshawa West's 88-yard run against Nicholls in 2013. The fourth-quarter score also became the program's first rushing play of at least 90 yards and powered Kitna's 102-yard performance on four carries.
HOMER SWEET HOMER
The Jacks kicked off the 54th season of Homer Bryce Stadium and a third-straight campaign with six home games against East Texas A&M and has since improved a home winning streak that dates back to the 2024 season to 11 games. Since the 2020 campaign, SFA is 29-6 inside HBS and is 30-9 at home under Carthel. The Jacks are currently third nationally in active home-winning streak with the second home winning streak of 11+ games under Carthel.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
It will be the 86th Homecoming game (43-41-1) on the SFA campus. The Jacks are 3-3 in Homecoming contests under Carthel having won back-to-back games for the first time since 2014 and 2015 which capped a five-game homecoming win streak.
HISTORIC BEGINNINGS
SFA is off to the program's first 7-0 start to a season since the 1995 campaign. It's 4-0 start was the first ever exclusively against DI opposition. A win over the Lions would give SFA its best start to a season in program history.Â
STREAKIN'
In addition to the heater that the Jacks are on at home, SFA has won a program record 17-straight regular season games following an 0-2 start to the 2025 campaign. The Lumberjacks have also won a program record 12 straight in SLC play dating back to last season.
MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME
SFA became the first team in the program's DI era and just the third ever to win three games on the road in their first four games of the season. The Jacks were rewarded with a six-week stretch that includes four of five games at home in addition to an open week.
RARE AIR
With SFA win No. 50 coming against UIW, Carthel became just the third coach to reach 50 wins with multiple four-year programs in the state of Texas. Carthel captured 59 wins at Texas A&M-Commerce (now East Texas A&M) and joined College Football Hall of Famer Dana X. Bible and McMurry legend Randolph M. "Med" Medley. Bible totaled 198 wins in his career of which 72 came at Texas A&M with another 63 at Texas. Medley won 61 times at McMurry and reached 50 at Southwestern.Â
NATIONAL POLLING
Stephen F. Austin football moved a single spot to No. 2 nationally in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS Top 25 and the Opta Analyst Stats Perform FCS Top 25. It marks the 17th-straight week that the Jacks have earned a national ranking and the fifth as a consensus top 10 team in the country.
SFA sits behind consensus No. 1 Tarleton State and it's the highest such weekly ranking for the program since November 22, 2010, when SFA ranked No. 2 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 3 in The Sports Network Poll. That was also the last time the Jacks received first-place votes in an FCS poll.Â
Southeastern Louisiana entered back into the top 25 of both polls landing at No. 23 in the Stats Perform rankings and at No. 24 in the coaches poll. Lamar dropped to No. 15 in the coaches poll and an additional spot to No. 16 in the media rankings. Houston Christian received 14 votes in the media poll.Â
Additionally, SFA is inside the top 10 nationally in the latest independent digital media polls by Redshirt Sports (No. 2), FCS Untapped (No. 3) and FCS Nation (No. 6).Â

He is 6–4 in games played in the Pelican State and has won his last four trips. The Jacks have also won six consecutive meetings with Louisiana opponents.Â
NOW DRIVING
Against Northeastern State, the Jacks put together their first two one-play touchdown drives of the season, along with two 12-play scoring marches, including just the third 99-yard touchdown drive under Carthel. SFA added another of each at Nicholls, scoring on a 12-play, 93-yard opening possession and JT Kitna's one-play, 94-yard touchdown run. The Jacks now have 28 one-play touchdown drives and 38 touchdown drives lasting at least a dozen snaps under Carthel.

The Jacks added their 25th and 26th such quarters against Northeastern State, scoring 21 points in both the first and second quarters, before producing another 21-point second quarter at Nicholls. SFA has produced 27 quarters with at least 20 points under Carthel, including 15 against Division I opponents.
START SPREADIN' THE [NEWPORT] NEWS
Play-making since he arrived on campus, first-year defensive back Makai Frisby has made an immediate impact on the backend of the Pine Curtain defense as well as a member of multiple special teams units. Through seven games, Frisby has recorded four interceptions, one pass breakup and two blocked field goals. His 0.57 interceptions per game leads the Southland Conference and ranks tied for seventh nationally in the FCS. His most recent interception, a full-extension effort, came in the end zone against UIW, helping the Lumberjacks preserve a 28-26 victory and improve to 6-0.
The Newport News, Virginia native blocked a field goal attempt in consecutive weeks (@PV, vsNSU) becoming the first Jack to accomplish the feat since at least 2002 and just the second to block a kick in back-to-back weeks joining Ed Bobino in 2023. Bobino denied a FGA against Texas A&M-Commerce and stuffed an XPA against Utah Tech.
Now about the defensive effort. Frisby became the first SFA defender with three interceptions over the team's first two games of a season since Stephon Rhea in 2005. He picked off two passes including a 35-yard interception return touchdown in the second quarter, delivered two tackles and nearly housed a blocked PAT in the season-opening win at McNeese. Frisby became the first Lumberjack with two interceptions in a game since Jaheim Mullen picked off a pair in a 59-17 victory over Northwestern State on October 5, 2024 inside HBS. He is the first Jack to record two on the road since Trent Perriman collected two in the 2016 Battle of the Chief win over NSU. Frisby? More like Boomerang. That kind of play-making always comes back around.Â
CARRY ON MY WAYLAND SON
Clayton Wayland ranks second on the team with 17 receptions for 306 yards through seven games, averaging 18.0 yards per catch with two touchdowns. He delivered a five-catch, 104-yard performance against UIW to become the second Lumberjack this season to reach 100 receiving yards in a game. Wayland hauled in passes of 31 and 53 yards against the Cardinals, with the latter setting up his eight-yard touchdown reception on the opening play of the fourth quarter. That score extended SFA's lead to 28–20 in an eventual 28–26 victory. The big plays continued a trend established at Prairie View A&M, where Wayland accounted for two of the Jacks' three gains of at least 40 yards.
Since the start of the 2025 season, Wayland has recorded 57 receptions for 832 yards, averaging 14.6 yards per catch. He has produced nine receptions of 30-plus yards, seven of 40-plus yards and two of 50-plus yards. One-third of his catches during that span—19 of 57—have gained at least 15 yards, while 56.1% (32 of 57) have gone for 10 or more yards.
SACK-OGDOCHES
Fifteen Lumberjacks have contributed to SFA's 26.0 sacks for 162 yards through seven games. Jaydon Eason leads with 5.5, followed by Lowote Jurkin with 3.5 and Emmanuel Harris and A'Amear Walton with 2.5 apiece. Jaiydyn Johnson and Kylan Darville have recorded 2.0 each, while Eli Ennis, Gary Seidenberger, Chance Sautter, Kyran Moore, Cody Ford, Kaiden Turner and Tim Muhammad have one apiece. Jacoven Julian and Micah Johnson round out the group with a half-sack each.
The Jacks' 3.71 sacks per game lead the nation and the Southland Conference, ahead of Stony Brook's 3.57. Eason, Turner and Muhammad each recorded a sack at Nicholls. SFA's seven sacks against Prairie View A&M remain its season high and marked the fifth game with at least seven sacks under Colby Carthel.
BACKFIELD BANDITS
SFA has accumulated 58.0 tackles for loss for 241 yards through seven games. The Jacks' 8.29 TFL per game tie for third nationally with North Alabama and South Carolina State and lead the Southland Conference. Twenty-five defenders have contributed, with Jurkin pacing the unit at 7.5, followed by Eason with 7.0, Harris with 6.0 and Walton with 4.5. Jaiydyn Johnson, Ennis, Darville and K'Mard Kimble have recorded 3.0 apiece, while Malachi Williams and Larry Jones III each have 2.5.
99 PROBLEMS
First-year Jack Jaydon Eason recorded three sacks and a forced fumble against Prairie View A&M, becoming the first Lumberjack with a three-sack game since John Franklin accomplished the feat against West Alabama on September 10, 2016. Eason rated as the highest-graded FCS defensive tackle in Week 3 at 92.7.
Through seven games, the South Carolina native leads SFA with 5.5 sacks for 43 yards and ranks second on the team with 7.0 tackles for loss for 49 yards. He has added 16 tackles, four quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles, tying Jaiydyn Johnson for the team lead in the latter category.
Eason's 0.79 sacks per game tie for first in the Southland and 16th nationally, while his 0.29 forced fumbles per game tie for fifth in the conference and 24th nationally through games played October 17.

AXE MARKS
>>> OUTTA JACKS WEEK: Since Carthel's first season in 2019, the Jacks are 6-4 in games immediately following an open week.Â
>>> THE CHAMPS ARE HERE: SFA took down defending conference champs in consecutive weeks (ACU, PVAMU) for the second-straight season (UIW, ACU in 2025). Prior to last season, a such feat had not happened since 2006 when SFA knocked off defending SLC co-champs Texas State and Nicholls.
>>> ROAD DAWGS: With the Week 2 victory over then #23/25 Abilene Christian, the Jacks beat a Top 25 team on the road for a third-straight season after earning wins at #20 Incarnate Word (2025) and at #22 Lamar (2024).
>>> LABOR DAY: Following thorough research, the 2026 Lumberjacks are believed to be the first NCAA Division I team (FBS & FCS) to win two conference games in the same season before Labor Day. Since the NCAA split Division I into 1-A and 1-AA in 1978, the Jacks are believed to be the fourth team to start a season 2-0 before the holiday.Â
>>> HOME OPENERS: SFA moved to 7-1 in home openers under Carthel and has now won seven-straight after beating East Texas A&M. SFA holds an overall record of 60-37-3 (.611) and is 8-1 overall in such contests since 2018.
ON THE HEELS OF HISTORY
The Lumberjacks are coming off a historic 2025 that saw SFA capture the program's fifth SLC title and first since 2010, while making the program's ninth FCS postseason appearance. That title came behind the program's first eight-win conference season and first perfect finish in league play in 99 seasons. The Jacks reached double-digit wins for the fifth time in program history, and the 11 victories last fall are the most since the '95 campaign.
CENTURY MARK INÂ PIGSKIN CAMPAIGNSÂ
Not long after Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College opened its doors, Dripping Springs, Texas native Robert H. Shelton was designated by SFASTC President Dr. A.W. Birdwell as the program's first football coach. Shelton, who would later become known as the "father of SFA Athletics," not only led that first team in 1923, but dressed out and practiced as well. Eleven days after welcoming students, SFASTC played the first game in program history resulting in a historic 120-0 trouncing of Center High School. It was the first of three wins in the inaugural season and the first of 16 victories in Shelton's six-season tenure. The point total remains a program record for points scored in a single game. Twenty-three players appeared in the first team photo published in the 1924 Stone Fort yearbook. Fast forward ten decades later and one opponent from season one: Lamar, which was known then as South Park Junior College and too in its inaugural season, is part of the '26 slate. The Cardinals won the 1923 meeting 10-0 on October 12 in Nacogdoches. The two sides meet for the 39th time on November 7 in Beaumont.
FOUR DECADES OF DI FOOTBALL
The last four decades of Lumberjack Football has been contested at the Division I level. SFA joined the division in 1986 and in that time has accumulated 238 victories with last season marking the fifth double-digit win season as a DI member.Â
IT'S THE 'LAND, MAN!
Season No. 37 of Southland Conference play is underway for the Lumberjacks. The Jacks' five league titles are the second most among active members behind overall league leader McNeese with 14.
ALL TEXAS, ALL THE TIME
Entering his eighth season directing the gridiron operations in the Piney Woods, head coach Colby Carthel eyes a championship encore for his program which enters the 100th season in school history on a daily mission to "be the best version of the 2026 Lumberjacks" they can be. If anyone embodies #EastTexasTough, it's a man who has spent over a quarter century coaching, and his entire life, in the Lone Star State. A former two-sport standout at Angelo State, all 14 of the Friona native's collegiate head coaching seasons have been spent in East Texas. He's totaled 110 wins, with No. 100 coming in a road blowout of Houston Christian last season, across two stops at a pair of institutions that call the timber-ridden region home. Of the 100+ victories, a program-record 51 have come at SFA. On September 26, Carthel passed Lumberjack legend Jim Hess (1982-88) for first on the all-time wins list. He is one of just six coaches in program history to win 20 or more conference games and is one SLC victory shy from setting a new program record for league wins.
