Kaylinn Kemp leads a trio of scorers with 21 points
NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball program returned home for their second matchup of the season against the Northwestern State Lady Demons but this time in the Sawmill.
After a 76-71 Ladyjack win in Natchitoches on New Year's Eve, fans knew the Battle of the Sabine would be a thriller. The Lady Demons got out to a 9-1 lead with 6:48 left in the first quarter. NSU continued to grow their lead with a 7-0 run with 4:15 left, 18-6. SFA ended the first quarter on a 5-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 10, 22-12.
SFA began the second quarter on a 9-3 run to bring the NSU lead down to four, 25-21. A minute and a half later the Ladyjacks went on an 8-2 run to make it a one-point game, 30-29. Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes. A three-pointer from Key Roseby wrapped up a 23-point second quarter to secure a 35-33 SFA halftime lead.
Both teams traded blows in the third quarter until a seven-point run by the Lady Demons, 45-39 with 5:37 left. Four of the next five made shots by the Ladyjacks were three-pointers. Those four threes were made by four different SFA players. The Ladyjacks went into the fourth quarter with a four-point lead, 53-49.
The Ladyjacks grew their lead with a 6-2 spurt, 59-51 with 7:53 left in the game. NSU responded with a 5-0 run to cut the SFA lead down to three, 59-56. Two layups from Kemp and free throws from Myka Perry and Harmanie Dominguez secured a 70-63 win for SFA's 14th win of the season and their seventh in a row.
