Wimbley, Harris named Players of the Week, Williams receives honorable mention
FRISCO, Texas - The Southland Conference announced the league's players of the week following week four action and among the three players honored as the SLC's best are a pair of Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in senior running back Jerrell Wimbley and senior wide receiver/return specialist Kylon Harris. Wimbley was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, while Harris received Special Teams Player of the Week plaudits. Junior linebacker Malachi Williams was also recognized as he received honorable mention Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Wimbley enjoyed an impressive evening toting the pigskin for the 'Jacks. He carried ten times and averaged 13 yards per carry as he totaled 130 yards rushing; an SLC-best effort this season against FCS opponents. Half of his carries went for a first down including a game-high 46 yard jaunt as well as a 22-yard burst. He added a reception for seven yards as he accounted for 39% of the 'Jacks offense in the win over Cal Poly.
Harris handled punt return duties on Saturday night and that proved to be a game changer for the Lumberjacks. He totaled 85 yards in three returns which included a 65-yard return touchdown that gave the 'Jacks the lead for good with just under six minutes remaining before the intermission. Harris also hauled in three passes for 20 yards.
Williams sent the 'Jacks on their way early on in the second half as he picked off a Cal Poly pass and returned it 28 yards for a score and a 21-10 SFA lead inside the opening minute of the third quarter. He continued his defensive tear with seven tackles, including one for a loss, two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry. The junior transfer was a major peice of SFA's efforts in forcing the Mustangs to just 2.2 yards per carry in 32 attempts.
