Senior cornerback under consideration for participation in college football’s oldest all-star game
TAMPA, Fla. – Preseason acclaim continues for Stephen F. Austin senior cornerback Charles Demmings as the Mesquite, Texas native was named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 Watchlist on Monday, July 28. The honor places the Texan under consideration for participation in next January's all-star game; the longest-running college football all-star game in the nation.
Demmings is one of 51 student-athletes representing FCS programs and he is one of just four players from the Southland Conference to earn a spot on the list joining Southeastern Louisiana's Kaleb Proctor (iDL), Incarnate Word's Jalen Walthall (WR) and East Texas A&M's Ike Ojukwu (OG).
An SLC second team selection a season ago, Demmings has received a pair of preseason All-American nods this fall with recognition as a second team selection on both the Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-American list and the FCS Football Central Preseason All-American list.
Demmings finished 2024 ranked second in the league in passes defended (1.1) and finished with a team-high 10 pass breakups and two interceptions in 11 games. He enters his final collegiate season four pass breakups shy of moving into the program's DI top ten and nine breakups from becoming just the seventh DI Lumberjack to record 30 in a single career and the first since 2003.
ABOUT THE EAST-WEST SHRINE BOWL
Every year, approximately 1000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft, or attend a rookie minicamp. Our aim is for this Shrine Bowl 1000 to serve as a look into our scouting process, as well as begin to preview college players who are currently all-star game eligible for the 2026 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2026 NFL Draft class.
The East-West Shrine Bowl is a best-in-class all-star event that will take place at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas on January 27, 2026. Our players will be coached by NFL coaches, in an NFL facility, and will have access to NFL-level resources, facilities, player-friendly schedules, and opportunities at the highest level. For more than 100 years, the East-West Shrine Bowl has served as a launching pad for some of football's most iconic athletes, including Tom Brady, Walter Payton, and John Elway, alongside today's rising stars like Brock Purdy, Zay Flowers, and Isiah Pacheco.
Beyond the game, the event plays a vital role in raising funds to support Shriners Children's, offering specialized pediatric care to children facing complex health challenges.
