LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Baseball Team (14-31, 5-21 SLC) split their Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Southland rival McNeese State University (31-12, 18-8 SLC).
Game 1: SFA 5, McNeese 4
The Lumberjacks and Cowboys exchanged a pair of scoreless innings to begin the opening game of the doubleheader. The Cowboys got on the board first in the home half of the third with a two-run single to go ahead 2-0 after three full innings of play. Both teams pitching remained dominant as neither team was able to scratch across a run in the fourth or fifth innings with the Cowboys still holding a 2-0 lead after five full innings of play.
The Lumberjacks would break through in the top of the sixth as Dalton Mullins, Cermodrick Bland, and Cooper Schneider all singled to load the bases for SFA, and Julian Swift would come through for the Lumberjacks with an RBI single to right to cut the McNeese lead in half at 2-1 after six full innings of play.
SFA kept the offense hot in the top of the seventh as a Mark Henning leadoff single allowed Ethan Adkisson to slice an RBI double into left-center to tie the score at two apiece. SFA would not be done in the seventh as a Dalton Mullins single put runners on the corners, and Dante Turgeon would do all the rest as he blasted a three-run home run to left to launch SFA ahead 5-2. The Cowboys responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to 5-4 in favor of SFA after seven full innings of play.
Neither team would score a run over the final two innings, as Reid Boyett stymied the Cowboys bats over the eighth and ninth innings to lock down his second save of the season and secure SFA a 5-4 series opening win.
