Series: SFA leads 18-2
LAKE CHARLES, La.- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball Team (28-5, 16-4) sets their sights on being crowned Southland champions for the 19th time in program history as they square off with the top seeded Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions (26-4, 19-1) for bragging rights, a Southland championship, and a spot in the NCAA Tournament field.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
The third meeting of the season between Lamar and SFA proved to be just as entertaining as the previous two meetings between the two Southland rivals as SFA took the season series over Lamar with a 61-53 win over the Cardinals in the semifinals matchup. The Ladyjacks showed their grit as they regrouped from multiple second-half deficits to Lamar to pull away late and punch their ticket to the Southland Championship for the first time since 2021, when they were eventually crowned Southland champs. The Ladyjacks top-ranked Southland offense proved to be too much in the end for the Cardinals in a back-and-forth defensive battle as they ended the game on a 9-1 scoring run over the decisive final two minutes. The win marked the 14th straight win for the Ladyjacks, with SFA having the opportunity to have a storybook ending to a magical season tomorrow afternoon and send them dancing in March to the NCAA Tournament with a win over the top-seeded Lady Lions.
Lady Lions at a Glance:
The Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions shook off a stunning and heartbreaking 54-52 loss to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in their season finale in a big way in their semifinal matchup against the Incarnate Word Cardinals as the Lady Lions defense stymied the Cardinals offense in an eventual 57-37 win to secure their spot in the Southland Tournament championship against the three seeded Ladyjacks. The Lady Lions cruised through conference play this season, posting a 19-1 record and rattling off 19 consecutive wins before their loss to the Islanders in their regular season finale. While the Ladyjacks boast the most imposing offense in the Southland, the Lady Lions win streak was fueled by a suffocating defense that ranked best in the Southland as they held opponents to just a mere 51.9 points/game, as the Lady Lions look to make their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament field in the last three years.
Scouting Report-Ladyjacks:
Trinity Moore stepped up in a big way for the Ladyjacks against the Cardinals as she played the full 40 minutes, knocked down six free-throws, led the team with 18 points, and came up clutch on the defensive end with a team-high three blocks. Avery VanSickle showed off her ice-cold shooting ability as her third triple of the game with 1:57 remaining, put SFA ahead for good at 55-52, and helped SFA send the Cardinals packing. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker pitched in massively for SFA on both ends of the court as she finished with 10 points, but just as importantly finished with seven boards and dished out a team-high six assists to help power SFA to their semifinals win.
Scouting Report-Lady Lions:
Lexi Alexander and Jalencia Pierre helped lift the Lady Lions to their semfinals win over the Incarnate Word Cardinals. Alexander stuffed the statsheet with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double as she shot 83 percent from the floor. Pierre tied Alexander for the team lead in points with 12 while recording a team-high three assists and swiping two steals on the defensive end for Southeastern. Arianna Patton added on nine points of her own, while Alexius Horne pitched in six points, three assists, and three steals for the Lady Lions.
Series:
The Ladyjacks have an opportunity for some sweet revenge against the Lady Lions in their 21st all-time meeting as this meeting offers the highest stakes in this rivalry to date. The Ladyjacks have claimed wins in 18 of the first 20 meetings, however, it was the Lady Lions outlasting SFA 87-81 at the Sawmill earlier this season as SFA looks to avenge the earlier loss to Southeastern on the biggest stage of the season.
