SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks men's basketball team (14-13, 7-9) will look to extend their five-game winning streak as they travel to San Antonio on Saturday evening to battle the University of The Incarnate Word Cardinals (13-14, 6-10).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks strong month of February continued on Monday evening as their late season surge continued with their fifth straight victory on the road defeating the East Texas A&M Lions in a 76-74 nailbiter to improve their record in February to 5-1. The win placed SFA into sole possession of eighth place in the Southland standings. The top eight teams make the Southland Conference tournament. The Lumberjacks have four games remaining in the regular season. SFA will have their work cut out for them over their final four games, playing three of the teams battling for a spot in the SLC tournament as well. Incarnate Word is just one game back of SFA for the eighth spot making Saturday's matchup a critical one for both teams and their playoff hopes. The Lumberjacks will continue to lean on an elite defense that ranks second in the Southland holding opponents to just 66.4 points per game while they look to keep their momentum on offense as they have posted over 75 points in four of the five games during the five-game win streak.
Cardinals at a Glance:
The Incarnate Word Cardinals will look to gain ground in the Southland standings as they are currently tied for ninth place with UTRGV with both schools holding a 6-10 conference record. The Cardinals held off the Vaqueros on Monday night to claim a 66-60 road win and remain just one game back of the coveted eighth spot in the Southland standings, currently held by the Lumberjacks. The Cardinals return home for their final two home games of the season looking to build off their win over the Vaqueros. The Cardinals will have no cakewalk of a schedule either to end their season as three of the four teams they play currently are in position to make the Southland tournament. The Cardinals host both SFA and Lamar before traveling to Commerce and Natchitoches to end the year. The Cardinals will look to counter SFA's top-tier defense and rejuvenated offense with an offense and defense that both rank in the upper half of the Southland as they rank fifth in both categories overall in the SLC.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Matt Hayman has turned into one of the more prolific scorers in the Southland over the last few weeks as he has now turned in back-to-back 20+ point efforts. Hayman followed up a 25-point performance against the Demons with an equally impressive 23-point effort against the Lions on Monday evening coming off a week where he was named Honorable Mention for the Southland Conference Player of the Week (POW) award. It was his second POW Honorable Mention this season. Hayman has scored in double digits in 11 straight games. Keon Thompson continues his stellar first season in the purple and white as he has recorded double-digit points in seven straight games for SFA while his 13.6 points per game rank just a tick behind Hayman's team-high 13.7 points per game. Meanwhile, Nana Antwi-Boasiako and Chrishawn Christmas continue to be forces to be reckoned with in the rebounding department as Christmas is fresh off an 11-rebound performance against East Texas A&M, while Antwi-Boasiako is Top 10 in the Southland in rebounds with 161.
Scouting Report-Cardinals
The Cardinals offense has no shortage of scoring ability as they have three players who rank inside the Top 10 in the Southland in points per game. Davion Bailey has been a handful for defenses this season leading the Southland in both points per game (16.7), total points scored (450), and three-point field goals made (94). Jalin Anderson and Dylan Hayman have been just as efficient with their playing time as both average 14.2 points per game, while Anderson has been a kick starter for UIW with his conference-leading 132 assists.
Series:
Saturday evening's big conference matchup will mark the 16th all-time meeting between these two Southland opponents with SFA leading the all-time series 13-2. SFA holds a 6-1 all-time road record against the Cardinals and have won the previous four road matchups over UIW. The Lumberjacks will be seeking some revenge on Saturday as they look to avenge a 55-49 loss to the Cardinals earlier this season at the Sawmill.

HOUSTON, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks men's basketball team (14-13, 7-9) close out their road schedule for the 2025 season as they play their road finale in Houston when they square off with the Houston Christian Huskies (11-16, 8-8) on Monday evening.
Huskies at a Glance:
The Houston Christian Huskies return home off a two-game road trip looking to get back in the win column and snap a three-game losing skid. Despite dropping three straight, the Huskies remain squarely in the Southland Conference standings as their 8-8 conference record is good enough to put them in a tie with Northwestern State for sixth and seventh place in the standings. HCU will now aim to improve their 7-6 home record in their final two home games of the season as they open their homestand against the Lamar University Cardinals looking to exact some revenge on Lamar from an earlier 63-61 loss to them, before closing out their home schedule for the season against SFA as they go for the season sweep of the 'Jacks.
Scouting Report-Huskies
Julian Mackey and Bryson Dawkins have engineered the Huskies offense this season as Mackey and his 15.7 points per game average are good enough to rank him third in the Southland in that category, while his 61 three-pointers rank him fifth in the conference. Dawkins has been a solid contributor on both ends for HCU averaging 13.9 points per game, while ranking second on the team in rebounds with 129, and draining 48 triples of his own. Elijah Brooks continues to be a solid complimentary player with his team-high 58 assists and 27 steals.
Series:
Monday evening's road finale for the Lumberjacks will feature the 12th all-time meeting between these two programs with SFA leading the all-time series 10-1. SFA holds a perfect 4-0 away record against HCU all-time. The Huskies recorded their first win over SFA earlier this season when they defeated the Lumberjacks 83-73 at the Sawmill back in January.
Next Up:
The Lumberjacks return home for their final two games of the regular season as they make their final push for the Southland Conference tournament. The Lumberjacks tip-off their homestand and flip into the month of March against Nicholls State on Saturday, March 1st, before hosting McNeese State in their final home game of the season on Monday, March 3rd. Tip-off for Saturday's match against the Nicholls State Colonels is set for 5:00 p.m. CST at the Sawmill, and Monday's home finale against Southland-leading McNeese State is set for 6:30 p.m. and will air on ESPNU.
