
Ladyjacks Fall in SLC Opener to Vaqueros

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball program opened up Southland Conference play against the UTRGV Vaqueros.
Both teams traded blows in the first quarter, but with 4:58 left SFA went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. Three minutes later, UTRGV responded with a six-point spurt for the Vaqueros to take a slim 20-17 lead. Back-to-back three pointers, including a half-court buzzer beater, from Lydia Cajuste to give the Ladyjacks a 23-20 lead into the first quarter break.
With the score tied at 31, the Vaqueros went on a 6-2 run to take a four-point lead. Both teams continued the back-and-forth trend but a last second three-pointer from Harmanie Dominguez sent SFA into the locker room with a 44-42 lead.
Neither team held more than a three-point lead in the third quarter until UTRGV make a layup and a three-pointer to take a 59-55 lead with 3:25 left in the third. Cha Gardner made a free throw with 23 seconds left gave SFA a 65-64 lead into the fourth.
UTRGV came out on fire in the fourth as they rattled off seven straight points, 71-65. With 21 seconds left, SFA was down seven, but rallied with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to two. There was not enough time for SFA to get another shot off which resulted in a 87-85 win for UTRGV.
POSTGAME NOTES
• UTRGV picked up their fifth series win against SFA, but the Ladyjacks hold a 12-5 series lead.
• Key Roseby led the team with a new career high with 26 points. She also added nine rebounds and went 4-6 from beyond the arc.
• Myka Perry tacked on 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
• Kaylinn Kemp led the team with six assists for her fifth game this season with at least five assists. She also led the Ladyjacks with three steals and two blocks.

The SFA Ladyjacks will take on TAMU-Corpus Christi in the first half of a doubleheader on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. for Faith and Family Night.
