NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks basketball team (7-6, 0-2) tipoff the new calendar year at home hosting the visiting University of The Incarnate Word Cardinals (8-5, 1-1).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks ended 2024 on a high note as they recorded a pair of impressive wins to close out the year. It started with a blowout win over the Texas Wesleyan Rams, before closing out non-conference play for the season with a hard-fought 62-57 win over former WAC foe ACU on the road on New Year's Eve. The Lumberjacks may have found the formula to winning as they scored at least 60 points for the ninth time this season and have posted a 7-2 record when scoring at least 60 points. The 'Jacks will be in prime position to extend their winning streak to three games as they return home to the Sawmill to kick-off 2025 where they have posted a 5-1 home record this season. As in the past, the Lumberjacks are fueled by plenty of offensive fireworks at the Sawmill scoring over 70 points in four of their six home games this year.
Cardinals at a Glance:
The Incarnate Word Cardinals hit the road to start 2025 as they open a three-game road trip in Nacogdoches when they square off against the Lumberjacks. The Cardinals ended 2024 on a high note as well as they will carry a three-game winning streak into the Sawmill, scoring over 90 points in all three wins, while winning four of their last five games with their only loss in that stretch coming at the hands of the no. 4 ranked Duke University Blue Devils. The Cardinals will look to improve their fortunes on the road this season as they have posted a 1-4 road record while being equally dominating at home as the Lumberjacks holding a 7-1 home record this season.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Matt Hayman and Keon Thompson have teamed up to create a dynamic scoring duo for SFA this season as both average over 12 points a game for the 'Jacks. Nana Antwi-Boasiako continues to be a contributor on both ends of the court for SFA, averaging 10 points per game, while leading the team in rebounds with 95 and blocks with 16. Meanwhile, Chrishawn Christmas will look to build off a career-day against the ACU Wildcats as he scored a new career-high 24 points against ACU while pulling down a career-high 14 boards in the win.
Scouting Report-Cardinals:
Davion Bailey has helped power the Cardinals offense as of late as he averages a team-leading 18.2 points per game which ranks him second in the Southland so far this year. Dylan Hayman has had no trouble scoring for the Cardinals as well as he ranks 5th in the Southland with his 14.9 points per game. Jalin Anderson has been a kick starter for the UIW offense as he leads the team with 82 assists while averaging 13.5 points per game.
Series:
Saturday's home matchup for SFA will renew this once iconic Southland rivalry as SFA leads the all-time series 13-1 over UIW. SFA has won the previous eight meetings between these two teams and hold a perfect 7-0 home record against the Cardinals. The Lumberjacks won the most recent meeting between these two teams in 2021 when they defeated the Cardinals on their home court 83-65.
