
Ladyjacks Survive at Home Against Demons

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team (15-5, 5-4 SLC) returned home to face the Demons from Northwestern State (8-9, 5-3 SLC).
The Ladyjacks were out to a fast start in the first quarter as they held a 12-3 lead with 5:09 left in the quarter. Trinity Moore, Harmanie Dominguez, Ashlyn Traylor-Walker, and Faith Blackstone all got on the board for the 'Jacks 12-3 run. Both teams traded baskets until the end of the quarter where SFA held a commanding 18-9 lead over Northwestern State.
SFA's offense continued the fire on all cylinders in the second as they went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 26-9 with 7:38 left in the second quarter. NSU responded with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the deficit down to nine, 26-17. Over the next two minutes, SFA went on a 7-2 run and maintained a 33-19 lead with 2:39 left in the first half. NSU would not go away quietly as they went on an 8-0 spurt to finish out the first half and cut the lead down to six, 33-27.
Both teams traded blows early in the second half until NSU made back-to-back layups to cut the SFA lead down to three, 38-35 with 5:59 left in the third. The teams went right back to exchanging baskets until a three-point play by the Demons tied the game at 42 with 3:59 left in the quarter. NSU finished out the third on a 5-0 run to take a slim 47-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Both offenses struggled to get shots in the fourth as the first basket from the floor was not made until 6:53 left in the game as NSU kept their three-point lead, 48-45. Another layup from Moore cut the deficit down to one, 48-47. Each team continued to trade baskets to keep the game one possession until NSU went on a 6-2 run to gain a 56-51 lead with 3:29 left. A minute later SFA went on an 8-0 spurt to retake the lead, 61-58 with 1:37 left. Clutch free throws from Traylor-Walker and Avery VanSickle in the last minute of the game secured a 67-65 win for the Ladyjacks.
