
Lumberjacks Travel for Saturday Night Showdown in Lake Charles

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks travel to McNeese State to face the Cowboys on Saturday, September 14 at Cowboy Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7:00 P.M. CT. It is the second road contest for the Lumberjacks.
Series History
This will be the 40th meeting between the Cowboys and Lumberjacks and McNeese currently leads the series with a 22-15-2 record. The series started on September 29th, 1951, with the game ending in a 14-14 tie. The most recent meeting came on October 26th, 2019, in a 33-10 victory for McNeese. It was HC Colby Carthel's first season with SFA. SFA's last win vs. McNeese was on September 17, 2016, in a 31-28 win. The game will mark the first conference game in the Southland since SFA rejoined in July after a three-year absence.
A Look at SFA
The Lumberjacks are coming off a tough loss last week against North Texas in their first road game of the season. The Lumberjacks fell short by a final score of 35-20. Despite the loss, SFA was able to force four turnovers including interceptions by Jermaine Brown, Luke Watson and Bruce Harmons along with a muffed punt by the Mean Green that was recovered by Jaheim Mullen.
Junior quarterback Sam Vidlak made the second start of his Lumberjacks career and totaled 20 completions for 181 yards and one touchdown. With his touchdown against North Texas bringing his total to six on the year, Vidlak ranks fourth in FCS and first in the SLC. Sophomore Jaylen Jenkins was the leading rusher for the Lumberjacks totaling 12 carries for 44 yards. Junior Kylon Harris led the receivers with nine catches for 74 yards. Redshirt junior Isaiah Davis caught the lone offensive touchdown for the Lumberjacks. Davis made a highlight play with a one-handed snag then outran the Mean Green secondary for a touchdown.
The defense shined for the Lumberjacks despite the loss. The defense totaled 10 tackles for loss, three sacks and three interceptions as well as one fumble recovery. Senior linebacker Jermaine Brown recorded his first interception of his career and returned it 70 yards for the Lumberjacks only other touchdown of the game. Senior Jeremiah Walker, redshirt sophomore Aaron Sears and senior Trashawn Adams all led the defense in tackles. Walker totaled six tackles and five solo tackles with one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Sears totaled six tackles with one tackle for loss and Adams totaled six tackles with one tackle for loss. Jermaine Brown also added four tackles one tackle for loss and one sack to go along with his interception. Bruce Harmon also recorded the ninth interception of his career against the Mean Green and Luke Watson recorded an interception also.
A Look at McNeese
The Cowboys are coming off a 52-10 loss against Texas A&M University last week. The Cowboys offense was held in check against the Aggies totaling 279 yards and 4.7 yards per play. McNeese was only able to rush for 67 yards against the Texas A&M defense. Quarterback Kamden Sixkiller led the way for the offense with nine completions for 80 yards one touchdown and two interceptions. Bryce Strong led the way for the Cowboys ground game with six rushes for 64 yards. Jer'Michael Carter led the way for the receivers with two receptions for 23 yards.
The Cowboys defense allowed 504 total yards. The Aggies were able to rush for 182 yards and throw for 322 yards. Micah Davey led the way for the defense with eight total tackles, one tackle for loss, and one sack.
