
SFA Track & Field Travels to NCAA West Preliminary Round

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas- Stephen F. Austin's track & field team will travel to John McDonnell Field to take part in the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round. The regionals will be hosted by the University of Arkansas and will take place from May 22nd to May 25th. The Lumberjacks have six athletes that qualified for the first-round regionals.
Head Coach Robert Hansen is very excited to watch his guys compete this week. "Very proud of everything that these guys accomplished to this point. Time to go have some fun and beat the best in the NCAA," said Coach Hansen.
Junior Cole Szegda qualified for the NCAA Regionals after his javelin throw of 66.68m placed him 63rd nationally. This is his first year competing at the Division I level. Sheldon Noble represents SFA as the only veteran on this year's squad. He will make his third first-round appearance after being ranked 93rd in the NCAA with a mark of 7.56m in the long jump.
The Lumberjacks have four true freshmen that qualified for their first ever regional appearance. Jarvis Anderson qualified for two different events. He is 22nd in the nation for the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.21 and is 91st in the triple jump with a mark of 15.28m. Hunter Murphy also qualified after being ranked 124th nationally with a mark of 2.07m in the high jump.
Nathan Kapel will continue his dominant first season as a collegiate runner as he will take part in the 1500m. His school record 1500m time of 3:40.71 has him ranked 46th in the NCAA. Kapel will be joined by Gideon Mengich who will run the 3000m steeplechase. His time of 8:47.95 has him ranked 52nd nationally.
"Can't wait to watch these guys compete. Each one of these guys excel on the biggest stages, so the expectation and potential are very high," said Coach Hansen. The NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round is set to get started Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m.
