NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Softball Team (5-20, 0-0) returns home following a five-game roadtrip as they get set for a tune-up before conference play by playing host to the Texas Southern University Tigers (6-5, 0-0) in a midweek doubleheader showdown.
Last Week at a Glance for SFA:
The Lumberjacks had a busy week last week that saw them start with a midweek game against Lamar in Beaumont, before traveling out-of-state for just the second time so far this season to participate in the Central Arkansas Invite where SFA squared off with both the University of Louisiana and the University of Central Arkansas. Unfortunately for SFA, they were unable to come away with any wins last week and will look to put an end to their losing streak this Wednesday at home and enter conference play on a high note.
Keep the Hits Coming:
Despite the losses, the Lumberjack offense has started to look more comfortable at the plate as between five games last week, the 'Jacks recorded four or more hits in four of the five games, while recording seven or more hits in three of the five games. The 'Jacks went triple crazy this past week as they clubbed three triples as a team highlighted by a pair of triples from Lexi Benson against Lamar and a triple from Chloe Reneau on Sunday against Louisiana, as the Lumberjacks recorded more triples last week than they had all season prior. Lexi Benson, Emily Land, and Kelby Robbins all recorded four hits over the five games last week for SFA, while Madison Nguyen recorded a hit in three of the five games last week, Chloe Reneau tallied three hits of her own, and Mallory Webb reached base in three of four games. Emily Land led the way in the RBI department with three last week, while both Benson and Robbins each recorded a pair of RBIs last week.
There's No Place Like Home:
The Lumberjacks might be returning home at just the right time following a week that saw them record multiple games over seven hits. The 'Jacks have been a consistent team at home at putting runners on base as in five of their seven home games this season they have recorded four or more hits, and have four home games where they have at least three walks. So far at home this season, the 'Jacks have tallied 40 hits, 21 walks, and have scored 18 runs as a team. Not only have the Lumberjacks been finding ways to get runners on base when at home, but have also found ways to grab extra bases as they have six doubles and one triple at home this season, all while stealing four bases at home this season.
Don't Blink or You Might Miss Them:
It is no secret the Lumberjacks have plenty of speed in their lineup which makes them a team to be wary of once they are able to get runners on base. So far this season, six different Lumberjack players have recorded at least one stolen base. Ellie Vance continues to be a speed demon for the 'Jacks as she leads the team with four stolen bases on the season, while Kaylee Paul has formed a dynamic duo with Vance as Paul is a perfect 3-3 on stolen bases this season. Madison Nguyen follows closely behind as she is also a perfect 2-2 on stolen bases, while both Chloe Reneau and Mallory Webb each have one this season to round out an SFA lineup that keeps opposing defenses on high alert once they get runners on base as they have no shortage of speed from the top to the bottom of their lineup.
Coming in Clutch:
Madison Nguyen continues to be a clutch hitter with runners in scoring position for the Lumberjacks as she leads the team with 10 RBIs this season. Lexi Benson and Emily Land have been just as effective when it comes to driving in runners as the two have teamed up to form a dynamic duo that has seen them combine for 16 RBIs this season. Meanwhile, Mikaelah Burkland and Amiah Galcatcher have formed a powerful duo as Burkland leads the team with two homeruns, while Galcatcher has a long ball of her own this season.
Keeping Up with the 'Jacks: Season Stats Edition:
Kelby Robbins has started to settle into a groove at the plate for SFA as she has recorded a hit in four of her last six games and has raised her batting average to a team-high .288 clip on the season. Madison Nguyen continues to produce solid numbers from her leadoff spot where she is hitting for a .280 average on the season, while drawing a start in all 25 games so far. Lexi Benson continues to be an extra-base machine for the 'Jacks as she leads the team in doubles (three), triples (three), and walks (nine), while also leading the team in OPS and slugging percentage with .708 and .385 marks respectively this season. Aydenne Brown leads the Lumberjacks pitching staff with her 3.62 era this season, while limiting hitters to a mere .220 batting average. Alexis Telford has thrown a team-high 56 innings while striking out a team-high 38 batters, while Brooke Gainous continues to show excellent control in the circle for SFA as she has issued just seven walks this season and has pitched three complete games so far.
Tigers at a Glance:
The Texas Southern Tigers are led by Head Coach Raven Rodriguez who is in her third season leading the Tigers Softball Program. The Tigers will conclude their six-game roadtrip in Nacogdoches which has seen them compile a 1-3 record on the roadtrip thus far. Texas Southern will enter Wednesday's doubleheader fresh off a 10-7 win over the Southern University Jaguars in Baton Rouge, Louisiana that helped snap a four-game losing skid.
Saniah Henderson leads all Tigers hitters with her .391/.995/.478 slash line this season, while tying with Marissa Martinez for the team-lead in walks with six, and leading the Tigers in RBIs with eight this season. Deana Zuniga and Madison Griggs both own batting averages over .300 this season, while Pamela Richardson has stolen a team-high seven bases on the year. Ja'Lynn Swiney leads the team in doubles with three, while Lanay Carr has the Tigers lone homerun this season.
Madalynn Gonzales leads the Tigers pitching staff with her 3.34 era this season, throwing 14.2 innings and striking out 11 innings while compiling a 1-1 record. Maren Berger has been just as efficient as Gonzales as she owns a 3.57 era, holding a 2-1 record in 15.2 innings pitched while punching out nine hitters on the campaign.
Let's Keep This Winning Streak Rolling:
Wednesday's doubleheader will feature the 15th all-time matchup between the two schools, and the first time in nearly two years these two programs have faced off with one another. However, the Lumberjacks will look to keep the good times rolling in Wednesday's games as SFA has won the previous 10 meetings between the two schools dating back to 2016. In their most recent meeting in April of 2022, the Lumberjacks defeated the Tigers 5-1 on the road.
