NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball Team (4-11, 0-0) gets set for a rematch with the Northwestern State Lady Demons (8-9, 0-0) in the home opener for the Lady Demons as these two schools meet for the second doubleheader this season between each other.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The SFA Lumberjack Softball team continues their busy road schedule as they will play their sixth and seventh consecutive road games this season when they make a short trip east to rival Natchitoches. The Ladyjacks are coming off participating in the UNT Invite this past weekend that saw them go 2-3 highlighted by a dominant offensive performance against University of New Mexico, which resulted in a 13-1 win, before finishing the second day with a nail biting 1-0 win over Power Five opponent Minnesota that saw Aydenne Brown pitch a seven-inning complete game gem against the Gophers. The 'Jacks will be looking to claim their first official road win of the season when they face-off with the Lady Demons.
Madison Nguyen raked the entire weekend in Denton as she finished the UNT Invite with eight total hits in five games, recording at least one hit in the final four games, and recording three multi-hit efforts. As a result of her stellar weekend, Nguyen saw her batting average rise to a solid .327 mark for the season, good for second highest on the 'Jacks, while she leads all Ladyjacks in RBIs with seven on the season. Amiah Galcatcher crushed her first homerun as a Lumberjack in the 13-1 win over the Lobos, and recorded five hits over the course of the tournament, recording at least one knock in three of the five games. Galcatcher leads all Ladyjacks in batting average as she sports a healthy .333 average for the campaign. Mikaelah Burkland showcased her light tower power this weekend as she crushed two homeruns both against the University of New Mexico Lobos. Burkland sent a two-run bomb to the left field seats in game one against the Lobos, before crushing her second homerun in as many days in game two against the Lobos with her homerun proving to be the difference maker in a 1-0 SFA win. All in all, Burkland recorded a hit in four of the five games SFA played. Mallory Webb rounded out the top hitters for SFA this past weekend as she recorded a pair of multi-hit efforts, highlighted by a 2-for-2 performance with a double and triple against the Lobos with four RBIs in the 13-1 win, while recording at least one hit in three of the five games.
Aydenne Brown's phenomenal pitching this weekend earned her WAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time this season. Brown pitched eight total innings over the weekend, allowing just two runs, walking only one batter, and striking out four hitters. Brown's epic pitching was punctuated by a complete game shutout against the Minnesota Gophers that helped fuel SFA to a 1-0 win, where Brown only gave up four hits all being singles and did not walk a batter. In total, Brown left the UNT Invite with a dazzling 1.75 era for the weekend, and lowered her season era down to 2.89 in the process. Alexis Telford and Brooke Gainous remained busy in the circle as well for SFA as they combined to throw 20 innings, striking out six hitters, and combining to throw 304 pitches.
The SFA defense ended the UNT Invite on a high note as they recorded three consecutive error-free games to end the tournament. Lexi Benson showcased her superb defense as she locked down the infield by recording 18 putouts and did not commit an error, and still sports a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage for the season. Madison Nguyen and Mallory Webb formed a dynamic outfield defensive duo as they combined for 23 putouts, while both posted an error-free weekend.
Lady Demons at a Glance:
The Northwestern State Lady Demons play at home for the first time this season on a confidence high as they capped off their 17-game road stretch to begin the season with an come-from-behind 11-8 win over the Syracuse Orange. Three different Lady Demons hit homeruns in the win over Syrcause, to help turn an early 6-0 Syracuse lead into an 11-8 Northwestern State win, with the Lady Demons flipping the game script by outscoring Syracuse 6-0 in the final two innings.
Taylor Williams played a massive role in sparking a late Northwestern Rally as she went 3-for-5 from the dish with two runs scored and five driven in, with a two-run homerun in the third to start the Lady Demons rally. Tristin Court and Ashlyn Walker followed suit of Williams in the third as they hit back-to-back long balls to spark a five-run third for Northwestern State. Five different Lady Demons recorded a hit against Syracuse, with eight different Orange players reaching base as the Lady Demons drew a season-high seven walks.
Tristin Court is the leader of the Lady Demons offense as she currently slashes a team leading .367/1.064/.633 for the season, is tied for the team-lead in homeruns with two, and has driven in a team-high 11 runners. Ashlyn Walker has formed a nice compliment with Court as she has crushed two homeruns as well, while recording 10 RBIs on the season. Taylor Williams is the third Lady Demon with a pair of long balls on the season as she has two homeruns of her own, while slashing .354/.950/.521.
Maggie Darr has been the ace of the Lady Demons pitching staff as she has posted a 2.50 era on the season, compiling a 3-3 record, and striking out 32 hitters in 36.1 innings. Kenzie Seely has formed a nice 1-2 punch for Northwestern as she has recorded a 3.69 era on the season, throwing a team-high 43.2 innings, and punching out 32 batters. Ashlyn Walker and Kat Marshall have been busy on defense this season as they both have over 80 putouts this season, while Mia Liscano leads the team with 43 assists on the campaign.
Series: This storied rivalry will see these two storied programs meet for the second time this season, as SFA has won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two schools. The last meeting between these schools was just two weeks ago when Northwestern traveled to Nacogdoches for SFA's home opener that saw the two teams split the home opener doubleheader.
