DENTON, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (4-10, 0-0) bounced back in a big way on day two of the UNT Invite thanks to an overwhelming offensive onslaught against the University of New Mexico Lobos (4-11, 0-0) and a dominant pitching performance against the University of Minnesota Gophers (4-7, 0-0).
Game 1: SFA 13, University of New Mexico 1
Day two of the UNT Invite saw SFA's offense waste no time getting runs on the board in their rematch against the University of New Mexico Lobos. The Lumberjacks can now add a seven-run inning to their early season accomplishments as just four days after exploding for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth against Sam Houston at home, the 'Jacks put a seven spot on the Lobos in the first inning. Alexis Telford would get the start on the bump for SFA and threw three innings while Kayla Palomino pitched two in relief.
The dominant first inning saw both Madison Nguyen (3-for-3, R, 3 RBI) and Kylie Bishop (1-for-2, R) reach base, before Brittany Coe (1-for-4, R, RBI) sent a line drive back up the middle to score Nguyen and get SFA on the board early 1-0. Coe would subsequently steal second, and Amiah Galcatcher (3-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) sent a ball through the right side to score Bishop and give SFA an 2-0 lead. Chloe Reneau (SB, R) would reach base, and steal a base of her own which would bring Lexi Benson (1-for-2, R, RBI) to the plate where she sent a sacrifice flyball to left plenty deep to score Coe and extend the 'Jacks lead to 3-0. Mikaelah Burkland (1-for-1, BB, R, RBI) continued her hitting tear as she would take a pitch back up the middle to score Reneau and SFA found themselves ahead quickly 4-0 in the first. Mallory Webb (2-for-2, 2 R, 4 RBI) carried over her strong hitting from the previous game against the Lobos as she took a 2-2 pitch and drove it to center field to score Burkland and advance Alexis Telford (2 R, 2 RBI, BB) to third to stake SFA to a 5-0 lead. The Lumberjacks would bat through the lineup in the first as Madison Nguyen stepped up for the second time in the inning and took full advantage of the situation as she would drive her second hit of the inning into center field to score both Webb and Telford and SFA left the first with a commanding 7-0 lead.
Alexis Telford was able to navigate some traffic in the top of the second thanks to some superb defense that saw SFA end the top of the second on a 9-6-5 double play and keep the Lobos scoreless heading to the bottom of the second. The SFA offense kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second inning as Amiah Galcatcher would single to begin the second and Lexi Benson would send a double to straight away center to put runners on second and third for SFA. Mikaelah Burkland showed incredible patience and on a 3-2 count was able to draw a walk to load the bases for dual-threat player Alexis Telford. Telford would follow suit of Burkland by drawing a four-pitch walk to score Galcatcher and move the SFA lead to eight runs at 8-0. With the bases juiced and only one out, Mallory Webb continued her hot hitting as she sent a ball to right center to clear the bases and showcased her blazing speed as she would reach third on the hit and blew the game open for SFA as they now led 11-0. Madison Nguyen continued to form a dynamic hitting duo with Webb as she singled for her third hit of the afternoon to score Webb easily and stake SFA to a 12-0 lead after two innings.
Telford would pitch a third scoreless inning for SFA, before Amiah Galcatcher showed off her power with a deep drive to center field for her first homerun as a Lumberjack to move SFA's lead even further ahead at 13-0. The Lobos would get on the board in fourth inning, but would not get much else going offensively as SFA was able to run-rule the Lobos 13-1 in five innings to begin the second day of the UNT Invite, thanks to a terrific pitching effort by both Alexis Telford and Kayla Palomino who combined to throw five innings of one-run ball, allowing only one walk, and forcing four flyouts and eight groundouts from the Lobos.
The SFA offense was contagious in their first game on Saturday as seven different players recorded a hit, while nine different players reached base. In total, the 'Jacks tallied 12 hits and drew four walks, while recording four extra base hits against the Lobos. Madison Nguyen went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate today, driving in three runs, and scoring a run hitting atop the SFA batting order. Mallory Webb was an extra base and RBI machine today as she recorded both a double and a triple, while driving in a team-high four runners. Amiah Galcatcher helped to form a three-headed hitting monster for SFA as she recorded three hits of her own including her first homerun in the purple and white, driving in a pair of runners, and scoring two runs. Meanwhile, Alexis Telford's patience at the plate paid off in the form of two walks, while Mikaelah Burkland and Hope Lusk each drew a free pass as well.
Game 2: SFA 1, University of Minnesota 0
The second game of the day pitted the Lumberjacks against another Power Five opponent in Minnesota. The Lumberjack offense was not quite as dominant as their first game, but one run was all they needed thanks to a complete game gem from starter Aydenne Brown and some stellar Lumberjack defense.
Following a first inning that saw both teams go scoreless, Mikaelah Burkland crushed her second homerun in as many days on a 3-2 count to left field to stake SFA to an early 1-0 lead against the Gophers. Little did SFA know that was all the scoring they needed in order to come away with a win against the Gophers as Aydenne Brown and the SFA defense did the rest of the heavy lifting for SFA. Brown stymied the Gophers offense all afternoon long as she held the Gophers to just four hits on the afternoon, all four hits being singles as the Gophers posed no real scoring threat to Brown who remained calm, cool, and collected against a high-powered Minnesota offense that featured five players with a batting average over .300 for the season. On top of allowing just four hits, Brown polished off her dominating performance in the circle by not issuing a single walk and striking out three hitters, needing only 86 pitches to get through seven complete innings.
Madison Nguyen continued to rake this weekend at the UNT Invite as she recorded two more hits in the afternoon cap of Saturday's games and is now seven for her last 11 at the plate over her last three games. Emily Land joined Nguyen in the hitting party as she recorded two knocks of her own including a double as she and Nguyen combined for four of SFA's eight hits on the afternoon. However, no hit was bigger today for SFA than that of Mikaelah Burkland whose homer proved to be the difference maker in a game that ended up being a nail-biting pitching duel. Ellie Vance, Amiah Galcatcher, and Chloe Reneau all recorded hits for SFA as they out-hit the Gophers 8-4, and played an exceptional defensive game that saw them commit zero errors as a team. Lexi Benson led the team with five putouts, while Mallory Webb and Emily Land recorded four putouts apiece.
The Lumberjacks will wrap up the UNT Invite tomorrow Sunday, February 25th when they get set to battle the hosts UNT Mean Green in a Sunday matinee match-up with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CST.
