
Ladyjacks Fall to Vaqueros in First Conference Game

EDINBURG, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team (7-2, 0-1 SLC) headed down to UTRGV (4-5, 1-0 SLC) for their first Southland Conference matchup of the season.
Avery VanSickle got the scoring started for the 'Jacks with a layup, 2-0. Both teams traded baskets until UTRGV went on a five-point spurt to take a 9-4 lead with 6:21 left in the first quarter. Later, both teams exchanged three-pointers but RGV retained their six-point margin, 18-12. Harmanie Dominguez hit a three with two seconds left in the quarter to keep the 'Jacks within six, 26-20.
UTRGV hit two quick threes to extend their lead to 12, 32-20. Key Roseby answered with back-to-back threes of her own then Faith Blackstone hit a layup to cut the deficit down to four, 32-28. The Vaqueros hit back-to-back threes before SFA responded with a 12-0 run to finish off the first half and go into the locker room with a slim 40-38 lead.
The third quarter was tightly contested as both teams continued to trade baskets. A jumper and dunk from Trinity Moore gave the 'Jacks a 49-45 lead. Two minutes later a three from VanSickle put SFA up 57-51 with 4:06 left in the third. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker finished off the third quarter with a layup and the 'Jacks held on to a 61-56 lead going into the fourth.
Both teams traded blows early on in the fourth. Traylor-Walker hit back-to-back layups to keep the 'Jacks lead at six with 6:03 left in the game, 70-64. UTRGV went on an incredible 14-0 run to take a 78-70 lead with 30 seconds left. The SFA defense did everything they could to get to ball back to the offensive zone, but it was not enough as the 'Jacks fell 78-72 in their first conference match of the season.
