CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball Team (7-2, 0-1) get set for their second conference game of the season as they get set to battle the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (5-3, 0-0) on the road.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
The Ladyjacks will be looking to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon as they look to record their first conference win of the season. The Ladyjacks opened up conference play last week against the UTRGV Vaqueros and fought valiantly in a back-and-forth scoring affair, however, came up just short of the win in an eventual 78-72 defeat. Despite the loss, the Ladyjacks offense continued to operate at a high level as they posted their seventh game this season with at least 70 points.
Islanders at a Glance:
The Corpus Christi Islanders open up their 2024-25 conference slate on Saturday at home against SFA. So far in nonconference play this year, the Islanders have compiled a 5-3 overall record and are coming off arguably the best game of the season to this point as they dominated Dallas Christian in an 81-28 win last Saturday at home. Saturday's match against SFA will close out a three-game homestand for the Islanders where they have posted a 3-1 home record so far this year.
Scouting Report:
Faith Blackstone and Avery VanSickle have formed a dynamic offensive scoring duo for SFA this season as both are averaging over 14 points/game. Blackstone has been effective from the field this season as she has drained 46 field goals this season, while VanSickle has been the deep scoring threat for SFA as she has knocked down a team-high 25 triples this year. Meanwhile, Ashlyn Traylor-Walker has been a kickstarter for the Ladyjacks offense as she leads the team with 34 assists, while simultaneously leading the defensive effort with 25 steals.
Paige Allen and Mireia Aguado have formed a dynamic scoring duo of their own for the Islanders as they both average over 10.5 points/game this season. Aguado leads the team with 31 assists, while Allen has tallied 22 steals. Jaeda Whitner is not afraid to pull up from beyond the arc as she has made a team-leading 18 three-pointers this year. Meanwhile, Nabaweeyah McGill has been tough on opposing shooters this season as she has blocked a team-high 19 shots.
Series:
Saturday afternoon's matchup will mark the 28th all-time meeting between these two renewed Southland Conference foes with SFA leading the all-time series 23-4. The Ladyjacks have won the previous three meetings between the two schools including their most recent one in January of 2021 when they posted a commanding 100-41 win over the Islanders at the Sawmill. The last time these two schools met in Corpus Christi came in 2020, when the Ladyjacks claimed a 66-44 win over the Islanders on the road.
