EDINBURG, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball Team (7-1, 0-0) continues their eight-game roadtrip as they get set to begin 2024-25 conference play on the road against the UTRGV Vaqueros (3-5, 0-0).
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
The Ladyjacks saw their seven-game win streak to open the season come to an end on Tuesday night, however, despite the loss SFA is still carrying plenty of momentum and confidence into conference play. The Ladyjack offense has been firing on all cylinders to begin their season as they average a healthy 80.8 points/game which paired with a suffocating defense that has held opponents to an average of 58 points/game has formed a recipe for consistent success for SFA. The Ladyjack offense has flashed several ways to score points as they average over 10 three-pointers made per game this season, while shooting just under 50% from the field. The defense has been even more dominating than the offense as they have tallied 110 steals in just eight games and have recorded double-digit steals in seven of their eight games, while holding opponents to just a 37 percent field goal percentage on the year. Thus, the Ladyjacks have all the ingredients put together to continue their fantastic stretch of basketball into Southland Conference play.
Vaqueros at a Glance:
The UTRGV Vaqueros will kick-off their 2024-25 conference play at home against SFA. The Vaqeuros will get to make themselves at home over the next three weeks as they are in the midst of a season long 10-game homestand that has seen them compile a 2-2 record on the homestand with wins over Arlington Baptist and St. Mary's. The win over Arlington Baptist to open the homestand marked the first home game of the season for UTRGV as they opened the season with four consecutive road contests. In their most recent game, the Vaqueros fell to former WAC foe Abilene Christian 59-45 as they look to get back in the win column Saturday against SFA.
Scouting Report:
Faith Blackstone has been a scoring machine for the Ladyjacks as she is coming into Saturday's conference opener on the heels of a career-best 24-point performance against the Texas Tech Red Radiers. The career day for Blackstone bumped her to the team lead in scoring as she paces the team with her 15.6 points/game average. Avery VanSickle has been a lights-out shooter for the Ladyjacks as she has drained a team-high 22 three-pointers while being nearly automatic from the charity stripe as she is shooting 91.7 percent from the line this season. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker has formed a three-headed scoring monster for SFA as she has had no trouble scoring with her 12.8 points/game average, but also has had no trouble finding the open Ladyjack as she leads the team with 29 assists.
Kade Hackerott has been the leader of the Vaqueros offense as she leads the team by averaging 13.9 points/game. Charlotte O'Keefe has been solid on both ends of the court for UTRGV as she averages 10.3 points/game, while leading the team in rebounds with 73 and averaging 9.1 rebounds/game. Gianna Angiolet has been the deep-threat shooter for UTRGV as she leads the team with 14 three-pointers this season. Tierra Trotter rounds out the Vaqueros offense as she leads the team in assists with 23.
Series:
Saturday afternoon's matchup will feature the 16th all-time meeting between the two former WAC rivals now turned Southland opponents. SFA leads the all-time series 12-3, however, the Vaqueros won the most recent meeting between the two schools last season when they claimed a 62-49 home win over SFA.
