EDINBURG, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (5-3, 0-0) open their 2024-25 Southland Conference (SLC) schedule on the road as they square off with the host UTRGV Vaqueros (4-3, 0-0) on the road in a Thursday evening matchup.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks enter conference play at the perfect time as they are boasting a three-game winning streak coming into their conference opener on Thursday night against the Vaqueros. The Lumberjacks carried over their success at home to close out the first ever Axe'Em Classic on the road as they started their four-game road trip with a win as Matt Hayman posted a career-high 27 points to help power the Lumberjacks past the UL Monroe War Hawks 68-60 to give SFA their third straight victory. The win also marked the 'Jacks first road win of the season and gives them no shortage of confidence heading into Southland play on Thursday evening.
Vaqueros at a Glance:
The UTRGV Vaqueros will make themselves at home over the next month as they begin a seven-game homestand that will see the Vaqueros play in Edinburg through December 30th. The Vaqueros next road game until the new year when they battle the University of New Orleans on January 4th. UTRGV has earned their seven-game homestand, however, as they faced several power five schools on the road that included Nebraska, No. 15 ranked Creighton, and No. 19 ranked Wisconsin.

Thursday night's conference opener will feature the 11th all-time meeting between these two former WAC foes now turned Southland opponents. SFA leads the all-time series 8-2 and have won the previous six meetings between the two schools, posting identical 3-0 records at home and on the road. In their most recent meeting last season, the Lumberjacks completed the regular season sweep of the Vaqueros with a 92-84 win over UTRGV at the Sawmill.
Scouting Report:
Lumberjacks senior guard Matt Hayman will look to carry over his momentum from his record-setting day against the ULM War Hawks, as Hayman is fresh off a career-best 27 point, five three-pointer performance to lift SFA over ULM 68-60. The scoring explosion from Hayman launched him to the team lead in points/game as Hayman now averages 13.4 points/game this season for SFA. Nana Antwi-Boasiako will look to continue to be a steady presence in the Lumberjack offense as he has posted at least six points and six rebounds in all eight games this season, while posting at least one block and one assist in seven of eight games this year.
K.T. Raimey helps lead a balanced UTRGV offense that has five players who average double-digit points/game with Raimey leading the way with his 14.3 points/game. Hasan Abdul Hakim has been solid on both ends of the court for UTRGV as he leads the team in rebounds with 48, while ranking second on the team behind Raimey in points/game with his 13.7 average. Trey Miller rounds out the Vaqueros offense as he leads the team with 26 assists.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (5-3, 0-0) continue their four-game road trip as they play their second conference game of the season when they face-off with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (5-3, 0-0) on Saturday afternoon.
Islanders at a Glance:
The Islanders, much like the UTRGV Vaqueros, have made themselves right at home over the last three weeks as their Saturday afternoon matchup against SFA will close out a six-game homestand for Corpus Christi. So far in the homestand, the Islanders have posted a perfect 4-0 record and have been pouring on the points as they have posted at least 81 points in all four wins and have scored at least 80 points in seven of their eight games to begin their 2024-25 season. The Islanders will open Southland Conference play against the Lamar University Cardinals on Thursday at home, looking to carry over their momentum from their non-conference slate to this point.
Series:
Saturday afternoon's battle will reunite these two Southland schools as they will square off with each other for the 30th all-time meeting and will meet for the first time since 2021. SFA leads the all-time series 22-7 and has won the previous three matchups between the two schools including their most recent matchup in 2021 when they claimed an 80-68 victory over Corpus Christi at the Sawmill.

Garry Clark powers the Islanders offense as he leads the team with his 14.3 points/game average. Sheldon Williams has been a force to be reckoned with on rebounds as he leads the team with 45 rebounds, 23 of which have been offensive rebounds. Meanwhile, Isaac Williams has had no trouble finding the open man for Corpus this season as he leads the squad with 32 assists.
