DES MOINES, Iowa- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks men's Basketball Team (1-0, 0-0) travels for the first time this season as they head to Des Moines, Iowa to duel the Drake University Bulldogs (1-0, 0-0) in a Sunday matinee matchup.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The SFA Lumberjacks will look to carry over the momentum from their season opening win as they defeated the University of Dallas Crusaders 85-51 at the Sawmill. The win for SFA marked their third straight win at the Sawmill dating back to last season where they have won double-digit games for the last 19 seasons and look to continue that trend this season. In the win over the Crusaders, the Lumberjacks shot 46.8% from the floor andcrashed the boards all night long as they pulled down 59 total rebounds as a team. Head coach Kyle Keller got valuable production from his bench as SFA totaled 59 bench points, and did most of their damage down low as they totaled 64 points in the paint.
Bulldogs at a Glance:
The Drake University Bulldogs continue their three-game opening homestand against the Lumberjacks coming off a commanding win of their own last time out. The Bulldogs defeated York 93-41 in their season opener at home. The home win marked the Bulldogs 22nd straight home victory, currently the second longest streak in all of NCAA Division 1 basketball. The Bulldogs made 13-three pointers and shot 52.5% from the floor in the win over the Panthers.
Scouting Report:
Chris Johnson showed no problem adjusting to the Lumberjack offense as he tallied a team-high 17 points on 67 percent shooting in the win over the Crusaders, while tying Nana Antwi-Boasiako for the team lead in assists with three. Myles Jenkins was the second Lumberjack to finish in double figures against the Crusaders as he had some electrifying dunks to help power him to a 14-point performance in the win. Meanwhile, Matt Hayman and Chrishawn Christmas formed a dynamic defensive duo for SFA as Hayman recorded four steals and a block, while Christmas tallied three steals and two blocks defensively.
Daniel Abreu stayed busy on offense for the Bulldogs as he dropped a team-high 30 points thanks to six three-pointers in the Bulldogs win. Bennett Stirtz finished in double figures as well as he finished the night with 18 points while leading the team with seven assists, while Nate Ferguson rounded out the top scorers for Drake with 11 points on 5-5 shooting from the floor. Andrew Alia led the team with three steals, and Cam Manyawurecorded two blocks.
Series:
Sunday's matinee matchup will feature the third all-time meeting between these two schools, with SFA leading the series 2-0. These two teams are no stranger to each other as they squared off just last season when they met in the Cayman Island Classic with the Lumberjacks posting a 92-68 victory over the Bulldogs to advance to the Cayman Island Classic Finale.
