
Lumberjacks Fall to Bulldogs

DES MOINES, Iowa- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (1-1, 0-0) lost a Sunday afternoon matchup on the road to the Drake Bulldogs (2-0, 0-0) by a final score of 66-51.
The opening two minutes between the Bulldogs and Lumberjacks offered a defensive battle waged between both sides as neither team was able to score a point. However, the Bulldogs broke the ice shortly after with a layup to take an early 2-0 lead, Chris Johnson quickly responded with a pair of free throws on the ensuing SFA possession to tie the score at two points apiece. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-3 lead, however, the Lumberjacks started to heat up from beyond the arc thanks to consecutive three-pointers from Matt Hayman and Nana Antwi-Boasiako to tie the game at nine once again.
Drake would respond with a 6-2 scoring run to go back up 15-11, however, Myles Jenkins would explode onto the scene for SFA shortly after as he rattled off five straight points to launch SFA ahead 16-15. The Bulldogs would respond to take a 20-16 lead but the Lumberjacks would respond with a 10-0 scoring run thanks to four points from Chrishawn Christmas and Matt Hayman to reclaim the lead at 26-20. Drake would get the last say in scoring for the first half though as they would end the half on a 5-0 scoring run to trim the SFA lead down to one point at 26-25 as the two teams headed to the locker rooms.
The Bulldogs opened up scoring for the second half as well off a driving layup to reclaim a slim 27-26 lead. SFA responded on their first possession of the second half though as Clayton Southwick would make a layup of his own to reclaim the SFA lead at 28-27. The triples started to rain down midway through the second half as Chris Johnson would drain one for SFA before Drake responded with one of their own to maintain a 35-33 lead. Keenan Emmanuel would drain another one for the 'Jacks while getting fouled, allowing him to drain the free-throw to complete the four-point play and put SFA back in the lead at 37-35. Back-to-back triples for the Bulldogs helped spark a 9-0 scoring run to put Drake ahead 44-37.
The two schools continued to furiously exchange baskets but Drake maintained a 51-42 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game, and extended their lead to 56-42 on a pair of dunks. SFA would continue to try and claw back in the game as they got points from Chrishawn Christmas, Keenan Emmanuel, and Nana Antwi-Boasiako however the Bulldogs had other plans as they maintained a steady lead the remainder of the game and came away with a 66-51 win over SFA.
